Title: val plaisant, egyptian house, st heliers
Post by: orkrad on Sunday 17 April 16 23:59 BST (UK)
 Greetings from New Zealand.

I am following the history of some ancestors who were  at Val Plaisant, Egyptian House, St Helier  in the 1871 census. These are three English women Elizabeth, Janetta and Harriet  SMITH .  I am wondering if they were actual residents of the area or if they just happened to be on holiday there at the time of the census. They appear to live at various locations including Bristol and later on in Somerset and were of independent means. I would appreciate any help  as I know very little about these three women.

Regards Orkrad.

The house on the 1871 census consists of 3 family groups (separated by a single line (/)).
Dwellings are separated by a double line (//).

The occupation of the head of the first household at that address is Lodging House Keeper.

So, it would seem likely that they were temporary residents?

Janetta born 1819; Elizabeth born 1821; Harriet S born 1828. All born England.

In 1861, they are in Clifton, Gloucestershire and state they were born in London, Middlesex.
Occupation "Fundholder".
Harriet is described as "Deaf and Dumb from birth".

Thank you for that prompt reply, It looks like the three women liked to "gad about" a fair bit.

Thanks once again. I know that two of the three sisters were born in London and christened at St Margaret Lothbury. At the time of their birth their parents were living at Austin Friars. Harriet Sophia is a stepmother to the two  older girls.  Harriet (aged 14 )  is her daughter .
