Title: help with burial Erpingham 1845 please
Post by: kit54 on Saturday 20 August 16 19:02 BST (UK)
Hi, Please can anyone help?

I know that there was a Francis Isle buried in Erpingham in the 4th Quarter of 1845.
(I'm not sure if it was a male or female)

Please, is there anyone in a position to shed any more light on this ie place of burial, age, sex etc.?

I'd be very grateful for any help,

Thanks,

Kit

Only one death showing up on FreeBMD, only one burial showing up too.... In August :(

Francis ISLES buried Salthouse Norfolk on 23 August 1845 aged 31 years.
Additional info: Drowned at sea.

Does also say: Sex unknown :(

Norfolk News 16 August 1845, on findmypast. Cannot see entire article I no longer have a subscription.
---names of the men were Robert Stacey who leaves a wife and ten children, pilot belonging to this port, Francis Isles married man whose body has not been found, John Snell a youth about-------

So Francis is male.
Usual rule of thumb but never assume, Francis with an I is male Frances with an E is female

Hi Claire and amondg,

Thanks very much for your kind replies, I really do appreciate them.

I knew about the one who was buried in Salthouse on 23/8/1845.

But there is  another Francis Isles (according to the IGI), who was buried in Erpingham in the 4th Q of 1845, so surely, this must be a different one?

Again, I'd be very grateful for ant help, as I'm stumped!

Thanks,

Kit

Hi

The record that you have found on the IGI (it also shows up on freebmd) is a record of death, not of a burial which could have taken place away from the place of death.

Unfortunately the only way to find out the details is to buy the death certificate.

Thanks for that Bee,

Yes, I was wondering if it was the same Francis Isles, but there is quite a time gap between his burial on 23/8/1845 and 1st Oct 1845 (ie the beginning of the 4th Q), so I'm still scratching my head over this!

Thanks for your help,

Kit

There is a good post here which suggests a burial couldn't go ahead until proof of death registration was produced, maybe there are two different burials but a badly mistranscribed registration in the indexes somewhere :(

Based on the newspaper article, his body had not been found. The church knowing all souls had been lost recorded his death at the time of the incident, it doesn't mean an actual burial took place. A death certificate not issued until the body was recovered or sufficient time had passed that survival was now out of the question.
Look for other newspaper accounts and you may get the answer.

I can only find one Francis Isles in Norfolk in the 1841 census, he is in Wells next to sea with Phoebe.

Francis Isles married Phoebe Roads 18 Oct 1839 in Wells (Francis' Father was also a Francis)

The burial for Francis in Salthouse says that he was from Wells

Could the registration in the 4th Q just be a late registration

I'm inclined to believe the records are for the same gentleman :)

Hi Claire, amondg and The Yokel,

Thanks very much for your replies - I know that the Francis who was buried in Salthouse on 23/8/1845 was the one on the 1841 Census in Wells.

I now think that the Death Registered in Erpingham in the 4th Q of 1845, was probably the same one, but the death was registered late.

Thanks very much,

Kit
