Title: NEWMAN Family- Poulshott Green, Wiltshire
Post by: Kiwi-pom on Saturday 23 July 05 09:17 BST (UK)
I am trying to research a great great uncle who was apparently born in Poulshott Green, Wiltshire in about 1883.

His name is William NEWMAN and he was one of 12 children in his family.

He served in St Helena in the South Atlantic during the Boer War in the 3rd Wiltshire Regiment.

He later went onto serve in France from 1915 with the 2nd Wiltshire Regiment, was wounded and sent back to England, where later he returned to Frances in the Somerset Light Infantry Regiment and also was later transfered to the Manchester Regiment.

I am aware that an unknown relative has placed some listings on a similar site seeking information on NEWMANs from Poulshott.

I am resident in New Zealand and all my known UK relatives are dead, hence I have no avenue to make inquiries.

I look forward to hearing from any NEWMAN who had relatives in Poulshott (Green) in the early 1880's.

Hi Kiwipom

Welcome to Rootschat!

Do you know the names of any of your relatives siblings? or maybe his parents' names and occupations?  Any little detail can help to locate people.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

No Newman connection I'm afraid, but this could be his birth (Arranroots beat me to the 1901 census  :) )

William Newman June 1884 Devizes Vol 5a page 105

The only other Williams born 1882-4 in Wiltshire had middle names.

If the 1901 census entry is your William, he wouldnt have had very long to serve in the second Boar War (which ran from 10/1899 to 05/1902) and he wouldn't have been born for the first (12/1880 to 03/1881)

Regards,
Catherine

ooops just realised Arranroots census is 1891, not 1901....hes at home and a farm labourer on 1901

Many thanks for the prompt replies.

I have learnt more tonight (NZ time) than I have been able to find out over many years.

I believe that William NEWMAN must have gone over to St Helena to guard Boer Prisoners of War fairly late in the war as he did not get the Kings Boer War Medal which only was for those that were in South Africa from the early to last part of the Boer War.

If the information that you have supplied is from the 1901 census, can you advise when the next census was taken / recorded ?

It would seem that the 22 year old son called George is my grandfather who died when I was only about 3 years of age and who is buried in Bath (Taunton Cemetry I think)

He was the second George in the family as the 1st one died shortly after birth.

My father was named George Reginald Alfred NEWMAN, so I can now see where the extra Christian names comes from.

My grandfather apparently worked for the Great Western Railways for 50 years as I have his 50 years Service Medal.

I believe he may have worked as an office worker for the Railways, although I remember my mother saying that their home must have been close to a river or lake as they were flooded out many years in a row - so much for living in a company house.

I am a serving member of the NZ Police and for 18 years I lived in a "company" house and you couldn't find anything warmer and dryer..........., when I was based at a small rural town some 75 miles north of Christchurch in New Zealand.

Once again it is very humbling to have so much assistance from all over the world - it just shows how small a world we live in.

I trust that all of those people who are responsible for that bombing madness come to the senses and re-discover their muslim faith and love for fellow man & peace.

Yes indeed to that Kiwipom!

Have a look at the Occupation board - I'm sure I have seen something there about tracing rellies who were railway worker, but can't spot it quickly.

You should be able to find you family using the familysearch (Church of LDS) website, using the info you have now.  It is free.

Do you know where your grandfather married?  Or his wife's maiden name?

There are various sites you can use to try to find the marriage, freebmd is the best place to start as it is free, but it is not a complete record yet.

Have a look at the Beginners Board if you haven't already - it might inspire you to other avenues of research.

Try posting on a new thread for your next query, as folk tend to ignore posts that have already bben answered (other than Cat and Me of course  ;D )

Good luck!

Arranroots  ;)

Good evening from Christchurch, New Zealand.

I would love to hear what you and you and your family have found out about the Newman family of Poulshot.

Early last year I was working at the Christchurch Central Police Station and met a young woman who worked at the Ravern Hotel at Poulshot and her parents, as a form of gratitude for what I did for their daughter, sent me a limited edition history of Poulshot and I was able to see a number of relatives of my extended family - people whose names I had never heard of.

On one of the pages I spotted a young girl, who was a Newman and who loooked just like my younger sister when she was a child - the only thing was that the Newman in the book was born some 70 years earlier.

Any information would be appreciated.

Regards,

Kirk Newman

My family came from Poulshot but I don't know much about them and hope someone would.

Isaac Newman was born around 1809 in Poulshot and married Sophia Bristow.
They had 5 children? Henry Newman was born in 1840 in Poulshot and was a carpenter / sawyer. He married Ruth Crew.
They had 4 children? Clara Sophia was born in 1868 in Devizes and was my great grandmother.

I was told they were funeral directors?
Does anyone know anything of this family?

Thanks for any help
