Title: Askew/Haddon
Post by: warncoort on Monday 29 August 16 09:04 BST (UK)
Folks,
George Haddon b 1834 in Yaxley, his baptism shows his father as Jeremiah Askew Haddon and mother Lydia (Sulch). When he marries in 1856 and 1864 he is George Askew Haddon but his children from 1859 through to 1880 are registered as Askew. His brother,William b 1827,is recorded as Askew.
On familysearch.org the family name is often shown as Askew or Haddon.
Any explanations welcomed.
Eric

Jeremiah Askew Haddon possibly illegitimate and descendants sometimes acknowledging this fact by using the Askew surname, and sometimes keeping with the Haddon surname?

What information have you found on Jeremiah Askew Haddon?

I have Jeremiah's 1793 baptism,no father noted, marriage to Lydia in 1813 through census to his death in 1874.
Maybe Jeremiah Askew was already married.
Many of the trees on Ancestry are unsourced, except "Yaxley Tree"which is mine,a quasi one place study.
Thank you both for your response.

I have recorded the death and burial of Elizabeth and also noted the baptisms and wondered how a single woman in a small village could bear children and not have mention of a father for any of the children.
Jeremiah Askew b 1745 was not in my tree as i could see nothing concrete to connect him to Elizabeth, though i have now created a new tree to find a link to her.
Thanks for your interest.

Hello Eric

I have come across single women having a brood of children without marrying before. Even in small villages tongues may have wagged but it looks like she stuck with it.
A tree states Jeremiah is buried in 1829 with his grandmother Mary Barnes.
So...... Jeremiah bap 1745 to William & Mary....
William Askew married Mary Barnes in yaxley by licence 1740/41 date of year not clear. There is a Mary Barnes bap to Jno & Mary Barnes in 1723. A Mary Barnes ( possibly this is grandmother) later marries in 1734 to a John Catlin. A Mary Catling is later buried in Yaxley in 1769 so that adds up but the tree keeps her name as Barnes.Jeremiah had land and property it seems so highly possible
to support Elizabeth and the children.

Mentions under Church;
There are the following monuments: in the chancel.......
"Mary relict of John Barnes and late wife of John Catlin, d. 1769, and Jeremiah Askew her grandson, d. 1829."

Trish and Tazzie,
I will take some time to digest all this and see what comes of it.
Online trees seem to have holes but your help will allow me to plug them.
Foolish of me,i have Freereg bookmarked and failed to look there.
Thank you for your assistance.

I have ordered Yaxley PR's 1604-1940 and cemetery database from Genfair which will relieve you good people of doing look ups for me.
I see the death of William in 1747 but Mary's marriage to Catlin has to be later than that but not showing up on Freereg.
Thank you.

Hi James just wondering if I have found the right tree information here.

My tree lines up like this

Jeremiah Askew marries Elizabeth Lydia Haddon. This couple went on and had a son William Haddon Askew.

William Haddon Askew marries Mary Ann Askew (Speechley) and this couple have a son Jonathan Askew who married Mary Ann Askew (Rosdale).

Jonathan and Mary Ann then had a daughter Millicent (Millie) Wills (Askew).

Millicent is my Great Grandmother from her son James Edward Wills.

Just after some confirmation I have found the right Jeremiah Askew and am heading in the right direction

Since my post i have received the PR's and the family is alternately Askew aka Haddon or vice versa. Some lived as Askew others were Haddon so searching was double barrelled.
Nothing in records to indicate Elizabeth Haddon had a second given name, following from PR's.
[NB –At the bottom of the folio for 1794 & 1795 is the note –“Jeremiah Askew son of Elizabeth HADDON
omitted to be registered at the proper time –Elizabeth HADDON his mother desirous of having his birth
registered positively declares that he was born on the 21st of May 1793. Wm HEAD Minister of Yaxley”]
The line you are following matches mine up to births in New Zealand.

Hi James hopefully you are able to view this rough but tidy family line I have drawn out. This is based on my immediate line through to my children the second of which will be added in 10 weeks time highlighted names are my grandfather and his mother/my Great Grandmother.

Based on information I have read in this post the second extremely rough attachment would suggest the line leading to Jeremiah Askew in 1793? And that Jeremiah Askew born in 1745 would be the father of Jeremiah Askew born in 1793?

Did you mean to attach a document to your post?
I have found nothing to indicate Elizabeth Haddon married anyone, her death in 1849 is as Haddon.
There are no Haddon baptisms in Yaxley prior to 1800 and only two marriages.
1793 baptism in Yaxley is Jeremiah Askew HADDON,no father mentioned.
Your attachment of Jeremiah Askew b 1745 to Jeremiah Haddon is guesswork at best.
