Title: Gwendaline Lilley
Post by: bobtonks on Friday 16 September 16 11:16 BST (UK)
Can any one help?
In about 1956, Selina Craft (nee Mansfield), born 1880, had a niece Mrs Gwendoline Lilley, wife of Sergeant Major Robert Lilley.
Selina Craft was living in Impington Cambridge at this time. (1956)

Can anyone see the link between Gwendoline and Selina?

Where did you find the information that Gwendoline was Selina's niece?  If this is correct, then why are you asking what the link is?

It has to be either through Selina's husband or Selina herself.

I'm struggling to find a marriage between a Robert Lilley and a Gwendoline.

Selina's husband Edward had three siblings that I can find and Selina had quite a lot, some may be half siblings. Edward was born n Cambridge and Selina in Histon according to 1901 census - they were in Derbyshire then. Edward died in 1944, probate 1945 to Selina and Midland Bank. Selina died in 1959, probate to Midland Bank

The info you have found looks correct. I also couldn't find a Gwen, who, not only married Robert Lilley, but also had a mother who was a Mansfield or a Craft.
My information was from the '59 Will of Selina. She had lots, and I mean lots, of nieces and nephews and I have managed to find most of them.
I just have to keep looking.
Thank you both.

Did she leave bequests only to her own nephews and nieces (Mansfield family) or to her nephews and nieces by marriage too (Craft family). Was Gwendoline particularly favoured or was she well down the pecking order.

It must be difficult for an executor, particularly if not a relative, to trace all the beneficiaries if only the names and relationship are given and no geographical location.

Gwendoline's maiden name would only be Mansfield or Craft is she was the daughter of a brother of either Edward or Selina. If she was the daughter of a sister, then her maiden name could be anything.

Lizziel
That's what I thought I said before; maybe I was not too clear. It's also possible, dare I say, that a Miss Mansfield (or Croft) married, her husband then died, and she married again ... and then had Gwen.

She bequeathed property, furniture and money to brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces from both families.

Thanks again.

Sorry,
I think I accidentally did last post as PM as well.

There is a Mabel Gwendoline Flavell reg in Cambridge district , and I believe she was the daughter of  Selina's sister Esther Mansfield. marriage of Esther Mansfield in Cambridge district 1907, one poss groom Frederick Flavell.

The Robert is a sticking point, but maybe a family nickname or Auntie got his name wrong.

'Mr Lilley' in the Will was 'Sergeant Major Robert Lilley'. Would the executers have paid out if she was not the wife of 'Robert'?

Thank you all for looking.
