Title: James HOPWOOD
Post by: cattao on Sunday 18 September 16 07:48 BST (UK)
1861 and other CENSUS says his birthplace was Llanglithlow/Llanglitho/Llangeitho Cardiganshire. He dies in 1884 in Ashton under Lyne, Lancs. He married Elizabeth Gough in 1831 in Manchester cathedral. Birth about 1811/1812. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out more of his birth and parents please.  i have his children, one of whom emigrated to Australia.
Regards.

1861 just shows Wales but 1871 shows Llanlithlow Wales which could be Llangeitho.  1881 is the only one which specifies Cardigan

have you seen the parish entry for the 1831 marriage? Is there a Hopwood witness that may help?

There are no bmds on the GRO index registered in Cardiganshire until 1883, but there are plenty registered in Flintshire & Denbighshire.

I noticed that the 1851 has an entry for a James Hopwood b 1835 Wales working as a servant and living in Ashton under Lyne. The Piece number is also the same as that for James and Elizabeth - 2233 - which seems a bit of a coincidence.

In 1841 he is with parents Thomas & Jane in Flintshire and shown as b Flintshire.  The 1851 also shows Thomas as b Flintshire 1791

There is a baptism of a James Hopwood at Llandrillo, Merionethshire on 18 August 1811 (born 8 August). Son of William and Jane.

Hi Deidre

Yes - I agree.  Because it was Merioneth and not Cardigan I didn’t post any more info in case it confused things.

I would always have thought of Hopwood as an English rather than a Welsh surname so it’s interesting to see Osprey’s reply re: Flint & Denbigh together with the 1841 for James Hopwood in Flint

Looking at the English 1861 there are 2,566 instances of the surname but only 104 in Wales.  I know chunks of the 1861 are missing which may account for the low figure but in 1871 there were only 150 entries.

So - total longshot time - I wonder if his parents were English and only in Cardigan for a short time.  He may have actually been baptised in England but you would have the devils own job proving it without more info.

Thanks everyone for your time.  1841 census James was definitely with family, married and with children.  I've seen the marriage entry some years ago and just picked up the entry in FS. There's quite a distance between Merionethshire and Cardiganshire, however, could have been travelling?? 1851 I have him with family in AUL and death in 1884. Thanks for the tip about the other researcher had a look at all those posts which were posted 10 years ago. May try and get a message there. I'll try some of the suggestions and then possibly give up!!!
