Title: Edward & Mary TERRY passengers on "Caduceus" arrived Auckland 1860
Post by: Tgapitbull on Saturday 01 October 16 02:02 BST (UK)
Edward TERRY and Mary TERRY were cabin passengers on the "Caduceus" which left Portsmouth on 26 June 1860 and arrived in Auckland on 11 October 1860.  (Source: Southern Cross newspaper, Friday 12 October 1860, page 2).

I have also checked the Auckland Area Passenger Arrivals database list at the Auckland City Library, which contains no additional information.

Can anybody help with details of their ages and where they were from?

Thanks
Wendy

Hi Val,

I know nothing else about them which is why I am looking into them.  I don't know whether they were siblings or husband/wife.

I have had another post on the New Zealand board re the cutter "Hero".  An Edward TERRY (Seaman) was one of the crew who drowned in July 1875 near Mokau, Taranaki.  The vessel sailed from the Kaipara and was heading to Waitara.   Apart from this information I also know nothing further about him.  Unfortunately it appears that his death was not registered.

Thanks Janette for your postings.  I will check out the Mary TERRY/John ROUT marriage to see if this provides any further clues and also look for there deaths.

If I am correct parents details are not included in marriage registrations at this time.  Would parents info be included on the Intention to Marry records?

Hi ... ^ the answer is "Not"   ... (except in the case of a bride or groom being under-age, where parental consent was needed and usually only one parent was required to provide this.)

More information on "Intention to Marry Notices" can be found in the Resources section of this New Zealand board.  ;)

Thanks Val for this wealth of information which is very much appreciated.

I have had a quick look at the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census info for the family and have't been able to find William Terrey in Southhampton.  Will take another took and see what I can find.

A work in progress ....

[Incidental :   The Probate record of Mary ROUT (nee TERRY or TERREY) gives her birthplace as > Swanmore, Hampshire.
A Mary TERRY was baptised at Droxford on 10 January 1836 - the d/o William and Martha.
On 15 November 1851 a Mary TERRY (father, William) married a Charles MILLS at Botley (reg. at S. Stoneham, Hants).  No further info as to whether this is or was the same May who came to NZ? ]

Hi Val,

I have had another post on the New Zealand board re the cutter "Hero".  An Edward TERRY (Seaman) was one of the crew who drowned in July 1875 near Mokau, Taranaki.

Hi Wendy

re:  Your search for Edward TERRY :

Perhaps if you tell us "how you have come by the name Edward TERRY, and what you are hoping to find out about him", then we may have a better chance of tracking him down ?    :)

Thanks Lu for the probate and census information.
Interesting the death notice for Mary ROUT in 1919 states that she died at her residence "Swanmore", Quadrant Rd, Onehunga - Swanmore being her place of birth.

Re Edward TERRY
Edward TERRY (Seaman) was one of four crew members on the cutter "Hero" which was abandoned by the crew between Mokau and Waitara, Taranaki around 21 July 1875.  Edward Terry and 2 other crew members drowned. Reports are on Paperspast; Auckland Star 26 July 1875 pg 2, Taranaki Herald 24 July 1875 pg 2 and NZ Herald 5 August 1875 pg 6 Shipping Summary "The Loss of the cutter "Hero".

I have since found an Edward TERRY in the Auckland Electoral Roll 1853-1864, occ Smith - Auckland - Householder.  There were two other TERRY's in the same roll; one a James TERRY, Stationer, Albert street and another James TERRY stationer, freehold estate.  I have not yet been able to find anything further.

I am hoping to find out when Edward TERRY was born and/or baptised and where; parents details and when he came to New Zealand and where he lived.

Hi Wendy

Have since found the Mary TERRY, 1851 marriage at Botley, Hants. (father : William) - was someone else.

Yes, had also found the Edward TERRY ('smith) and other TERRY's on e/roll, Auckland.  ;)

I am hoping to find out when Edward TERRY was born and/or baptised and where; parents details and when he came to New Zealand and where he lived.

... "when Edward TERRY ..."

But which Edward TERRY ??     The Auckland 'smith ???  ... the seaman who drowned  ???

*  Do you have an Edward TERRY in your "tree" ... or say, married into a family .... or   ???

Just trying to ascertain why it is you are "chasing up" this Edward ?   ;)

Hi Lu,

Edward TERRY is not in my tree or married into the family.

I want to find information on the Edward TERRY who was a crew member on the "Hero".  However I have nothing much to go on so I am checking any Edward Terry's that I locate around the Auckland area, to see if I can find the "right" one and eliminate those who are not.

John Atkinson Walker (my husband's great grandfather) was a co-owner of the "Hero". If I can find enough information about the "Hero" and crew members I hope to be able to write this up to become part of the story about JA Walker.

Wendy, was Mary in your family?

So to complete Mary if anyone else is looking for information...

1841 Census for Mary Terrey’s family
William Terrey 34 b in county a school master
Martha 35 b in county
William son 9 b in county
Martha daug 7 b in county
Mary daug 5 b in county
Sarah daug 3 b in county
At Hills Pound – Droxford Hampshire.

1851 shows her father as a Grocer.. could Mary and John’s family been acquainted as John’s father was in the same trade.. and the only reason what I can think of as to why Mary leaves UK on her own leaving all her family behind.

NZ Cemetery Records for Onehunga St Peters Auckland NZ - John Rout

Thanks Val for completing the information on Mary.  She is not in my family either.  It is possible that Mary and John's family knew each other.  Was interesting that an Edward TERRY and also Mary TERRY came out to NZ on the same vessel.  This info shows no connection between Edward and Mary other than same surname.

Going back to the Edward TERRY (Seaman) than I am looking for.  Any suggestions as to where I could look next welcome?

Hi Wendy

Found the following on the "Mariners in Australian Waters" website.
It's always a "go to" page for me when seeking sailors. [Ooops ... I meant seafarers.  ;D ]

Ship:  "Ethereal" - from London to Sydney, NSW - arrived 7 February 1857.

E. TERRY - aged 20 - Cuddy servant - of Great Britain - Crew

Many thanks Lu - this is fantastic information.

I have looked at the IGI and found an Edward TERREY chr 23 November 1836, Southampton, Hants.  Parents Jacob TERREY and Maria or Mary.

Looking at the 1851 census for Middlesex, Shoreditch (St Leonards), Haggerstone East 19 I found Jacob 38 Builder, Maria his wife 40, James 17, Edward 16, Frederick 14 and Elizabeth 7 all born Bedford (if I have read this correctly) and living at Priory Terrace.

I will see if I can find anything further on E TERRY, Cubby Servant as it is so easy to go down the wrong path.

Mary Terry is my Great great grandmother. Her father in law John Rout built the first houses in Onehunga. One of the houses is in park in Onehunga, it's called by another name. He also donated the money to build the Congregational Church and his house was next door.
Mary married John Rout 31 July 1862. They had 3 children, Ellen, Frederick and Grace.
Ellen married Stanley Tirrell 14 Oct 1903. They had 3 children Constance, Alan &?  The marriage broke up.
Constance married Edwin Price 27 July 1927.

Mary Terry came to NZ with family friends Charlotte & George Laishley. We have story that she was unwell, weak lungs so was sent to NZ. she died 19 April 1919 aged 83.
