Title: The SUNTER and ANDREW family. Kilconquhar and Paisley
Post by: Mollyrobz on Thursday 06 October 16 16:58 BST (UK)
Please help me with my SUNTER family research :)

So far I am up too DAVID SUNTER who married MARGARET ANDREW in PAISLEY, RENFREWSHIRE 1785.

I believe that MARGARET originated from PAISLEY and DAVID from FIFE. Most of his sons, sons sons and so on coming from the KILCONQUHAR area. I don't have a birth for DAVID or MARGARET as of yet.

I know of children
Jean, Alexander, James, Anne, David, John, Janet, Elizabeth and William. Some born PAISLEY others born Kilconquhar.

The surname changes from SUNTER to SUNTAR and a few others. DAVID was possibly the son of ALEXANDER SUNTAR and MARGARET SYMSON.

Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks in advance
Molly

I have an Amelia Sunter marrying into my Tannahill (Andrew) family in 1860 (20th July) in Paisley. Her father was Alexander Sunter and her mother, I think, is Amelia McLuskey (unclear on marriage certificate). Both parents are dead at the time of her marriage.

Is Alexander possibly the Alexander you mention?

I don't know about the Paisley connection, but there were certainly Sunters in the village of Earlsferry in east Fife, which is part of the parish of Kilconquhar although it's physically joined on to Elie, a parish in its own right.

William Sunter died in Earlsferry in 1878, aged 80. The widower of Elizabeth Peebles, he was the son of David Sunter and Margaret Andrew. At the time of his death William was a pauper, formerly a linen weaver.

hi

I'm Andrew Sunter. not related to the Paisley Sunter directly but my family tree takes me back to Kilconquhar too. I think there were two William Sunter in Kilconquhar in the late 1780s. one of them is my many times removed grandfather. I always assumed the other was a cousin of his. one went to Paisley, one stayed in Fife.

so although it maybe a very wide shot we are probably related

I'm not related to any of the Sunters, I just keep tabs on the various Peebles families in east Fife as my mother was a Peebles, so I arrived at William Sunter via his wife Margaret Peebles (not a member of my extended Peebles family as it turned out).

Dear Molly,

My name is David Ritchie and in researching my family history I have found that a Jean Sunter married a David Ritchie in Kilconquhar in 1811. Jean's father David was born in 1762 and her mum Margaret Andrew was born in 1764 in Fife.

Hope that helps.
I have with no success try to find out when Jean Ritchie ne Sunter died. Can you help ?

David and Jean had five kids.

Hi Andrew,

ANY G/father no matter how many x whether x 20 g/father would not include any removes as he would be your direct line.

Dear Molly,

Re the birth date of David Sunter he was born in 1762 and his wife Margaret Andrew born in 1764. I hope this helps.

One of their children Jean married a David Ritchie (my grandfather five generations back).

Do you know when she died ?
I have seen on Findmypast website that a Jean Sunter was buried on 5 August, 1849 in Kilconquhar, Earlsferry. It has that her husband was a David Dirkie. I am thinking maybe through poor handwriting David's surname was Ritchie.

Any views ?

regards

David

Hi David,

Don't be surprised as this may have been the 'latest tech' of OCR reading (Optical Character Recognition) i.e. not transcribed by a person but a computer scanning prog!

This looks to me to be a high probability it's the same David Ritchie.

Try this link & get in touch with NorrieG (member here on RC) with any requests...good luck!
