Title: Ebenezer Hayles, Ickleton/Duxford/Whittlesford/Fowlmere
Post by: Lexi73 on Monday 17 October 16 09:53 BST (UK)
Hi you good people,
Can anyone help me find the birth, marriage and parents/siblings of Ebenezer Hayles, who marries Maria Barnett in Fowlmere in 1774?
I keep finding trees (on Ancestry) that have information, but I am not sure whether to trust the info the users put on. I'd rather see proof first. Familysearch do have a lot of info on Ebenezer's children and their marriages but I can't find his origins.
It does seem the family is from this area, there are a great many Hayles and Hales people in the district as far back as the 1600s.
Any help is welcome! Ebenezer is my 6-times great-grandfather.
Many thanks!
Lexi.

Ebenezer may have had a brother (or cousin) called Cornwell/Cornhill, they had children at the same time in the same village.

So a birth 1746.

Also it seems his apprenticeship(on Ancestry and Find my Past)

Yes Ancestry has lots of trees giving details but none are backed up with hard facts. A death date is given but again no proof.  Could be one tree "guessing" and others just following on.

Take it you have tried the spelling variations on Hayles/Hales/Hails etc. (be creative there).

Yeah boy have I been creative... But other than seven children (Mary, Jamima, Kezia, James, Kerenhappuch (!), Honour Brocket and Ann) between 1776 and 1796 I found nothing. Brilliant names though!
The son being James that might be the name of Ebenezer's father, while Brocket might be his mother's surname, but that's just hearsay from those possibly untrustworthy trees. Won't act upon that until I've found proof  ;)
There are trees that give one Cornwell as his child also, but he seems to be the son of another Cornwell/Cornhill Hayles, who may be Ebenezer's brother.

I'm thinking these folks could be methodists, what with names such as Ebenezer, Kerenhappuch and Honour?

If anyone can help me find out whether there was a family relationship between Ebenezer Hayles and Cornwell (Cornwall/Cornhill) Hayles, that would also help. They were both having children baptised in Whittlesford in the 1770s and 1780s.

And was perhaps the Jebediah Hayles who married Anne Butler in Foxton in 1781? The bachelor is said to be from 'Fowlmire in the county of Cambridge', which is where Ebenezer also marries (1774). Jebediah has a strange enough name to be a brother to Ebenezer.

Hello
Cornhill Hayles is easier.
Again an entry in the NBI Cornwell Hailes  at Whittlesford  1818 gives a birth 1750

Baptism Cornhill Hayles 6.1.1750 s of William and Elizabeth at Ickleton.

Struggling to find any siblings

Familysearch has a marriage at Great Shelford
William Hayles and Elizabeth Cornwell 1744

Yeah, I found that out! He is so much easier because of that weird name (mother's surname) so that's quite a handy tool for research. Still no definite link to Ebenezer, but I am thinking that they were brothers or that their fathers were.
Not sure whether Ebenezer's father was William, he only seems to have one son and that is James. So perhaps the cousin option fits better: if Ebenezer had a father called James, while Cornwell had a father called William, and James and William were brothers?

Can't find any siblings either, perhaps Cornwell's mother or father died shortly after his birth?

There is a William Hales who dies in Ickleton in 1752. Might be the explanation why there are no siblings?
