Title: Robert LYONS, (c1816-1886) Drumnakilly & Killyclogher
Post by: Janet Mc on Thursday 20 October 16 05:22 BST (UK)
This man seems to have tenanted several farms around the Drumnakilly area. He had two children I'm fairly sure of and 2 more possible children: Possibly married a Mary Johnston/Houston

1. Robert 1842. Married Ellen McFarland at Omagh First Presbyterian on 22 Feb 1872 (Drumragh parish). Had son Robert Andrew on 12 April 1873 Omagh. Mary 15 August 1874
2. Letitia 1844
3. Andrew 29 Dec 1849 (a 20 year old of this name dies in Drumnakilly in 1869) - baptised 11 Jan (must be 1850)
4. Mary 16 Nov 1850 Cloghfin, Edenderry. Baptised 4 Dec 1850. Did she marry Alexander Smith on 8 April 1876 in Drumnakilly church?

Would love to find out who his siblings were? A marriage record? c 1841 Parents?? Any help gratefully received

A Mary Lyons certainly married an Alexander Smith-
daughter Jane born 1877- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FG8B-Q9T
son Christopher Lyons born 1882- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2M4-1NHF

Administration of the estate of Robert Lyons late of Killyclogher County Tyrone Farmer who died 1 October 1886 granted at Londonderry to Robert Lyons junior Farmer.

1. Robert 1842. Married Ellen McFarland at Omagh First Presbyterian on 22 Feb 1872 (Drumragh parish). Had son Robert Andrew on 12 April 1873 Omagh. Mary 15 August 1874
daughter Margaret Matilda (1877)- https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGL9-Z8T

Could this be Robert in 1901?
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Drumnakilly/Drumnakilly/1748287
Widow Ellen in 1911?

Back to this question-
Would love to find out who his siblings were? A marriage record? c 1841 Parents??
Best place to start would be church records (if they survive) since Robert Lyons would have married before the start of civil registration. However, it's possible the marriage record might just list date with names of bride and groom.

Have discovered that 'My' Robert Lyons died on 11 April 1872 and his wife Mary, two days later and both buried in Drumnakilly.

The Killyclogher Robert of 1886 is a different family.

Mary's surname was either Johnston or Houston (could look similar if people trying to decipher handwriting.

Their children:
Robert Lyons & Mary ?Huston or Johnston
Children:
1. James c 1840. He married Isabella Caldwell on 22 Mar 1866 at Omagh 1st Pres. He died 14 Dec 1878 aged 38 and is buried with his daughter Annie Mayne aged 2 and his wife, Isabella who died 25 Feb 1919, aged 86 and they’re buried in Drumakilly graveyard

2.  Robert 1842. Married Ellen McFarland at Omagh First Presbyterian on 22 Feb 1872 (Drumragh parish). Had son Robert Andrew on 12 April 1873 Omagh. Mary 15 August 1874. Died 10 May 1907 in Drumnakilly (married farmer, 65, pneumonia, son Robert A present at death)

3. Letitia 1844 - married Joseph McIver of Bracky and lived and died there in 1898
4. Andrew 29 Dec 1849 (a 20 year old of this name dies in Drumnakilly in 1869) - baptised 11 Jan (must be 1850). Died 3 Aug 1869 and Drumnakilly stone says it was erected by his parents RL and Mary

5. Mary 16 Nov 1850 Cloghfin, Edenderry. Baptised 4 Dec 1850. Married Alexander Smith on 18 April 1876 in Drumnakilly church? Witnesses: William Smith and Joseph McIver (signed I think) If so daughter, Jane born 30 April 1877 Copney and son Christopher Lyons, 29 Mar 1882 according to his US death record, 29 June 1950 (Illinois, he was a gardener).

But I've love to know where Mary adn Alexander Smith ended up - haven't found them

Son Alexander Smith born on 15 August 1882 died in Chester County Hospital Pennsylvania on 8 October 1949, his wife Isabella was informant on the death certificate, which correctly gave his DOB and parents (Alexander Smith senior and Mary Lyons).

I wonder was Alexander b.1895 really meant to be Andrew - see 1911 census return below -  naming two sons Alexander would have been a bit odd (since we now know the first Alexander b. 1882 didn't die early) :

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Loughmacrory/Copney/844854/

Edited to add:  BTW, although the census return for Alexander and family in 1901 seems missing, they do appear on the 1901 'Enumerator's abstract' and 'House and Building Return' for Copney, showing 7 males and 3 females in the household:

Have now seen a transcription of the baptismal record and he was indeed baptised as Andrew.

Just a possibility, but GRONI online has a death registered in Omagh district for an Alexander Smyth who died on 7 November 1924 with a reported age of 89.

thank you so much. I'll get check back. Does seem likely that Alexander is the 1924 death. I wonder when Mary died?

I now have more information on this family and have found 5 children for Robert LYONS of Drumnakilly (Killyclogher is a different man).

Robert LYONS married Mary (Johnston or Houston) before 1840.
Their children:
1. James c 1840. Married Isabella Caldwell 22 Mar 1866 in 1st Presbyterian church, Omagh - died 1878 aged 39.
2. Robert
3. Letitia c 1844. Married Joseph McIvor of Bracky in 1859 (he was born c 1834 son of Daniel -not David as listed on the certificate)
4. Andrew 29 Dec 1849 and buried Drumnakilly in 1869 (and buried with his parents- which is how i found them)
5. Mary 16 Nov 1850 Edenderry. Married Alexander Smyth of Copney.

The last two children had records but the mother's surname is listed as both 'Houston' and 'Johnstone' - my question is to Gaffy - would there be an original record and could it be looked at or photographed by someone who lives close to the record centre? You seemed to have looked at an original record for the Mary and Alexander's youngest son Andrew (and so proved that was his name and not Alexander).

I would love to know Mary's maiden name.
Unfortunately the birth dates of the three eldest children and the marriage date of Robert and Mary is unlikely to be found because all those records seem to be gone.

Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid it wasn't an original record, at reply #8 I said 'Have now seen a transcription of the baptismal record and he was indeed baptised as Andrew'.

sorry to hear that you didn't have access to originals. I don't think I'm likely to get to N. Ireland to see them.

Maybe someone else will. Thank you

An update:
I have now found the death of this many and his wife.
Robert died 11 April 1872 aged 70 and Mary a day later 12 April 1872 aged 69.

They are buried in Drumnakilly graveyard with their son, Andrew.

I still have not confirmed Mary's maiden name or parents ...
