Trying to narrow James death down a bit - he's not mentioned in the obit for Mary's son George from her first marriage in 1925, so possibly before Feb 1925.

Link to the funeral notice in The Age  28 Aug 1929.
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article204098260

Mary Jane possibly lived in the Preston, Northcote, Thornbury area from 1903 and she had occupation as charwoman and HD.  If it is the correct Mary Jane then she was no James O'NEILL at the same address.

So we are searching for any information about him from around the time of the birth of their last child in 1895 to 1903 when Mary Jane appears on the electoral roll as a charwoman.

Sue the Victorian BDM's are online.  Just saves loading separate CD's if you are searching that way.
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/indexsearch.doj

The online databases on subscription only websites have been found to have omissions and errors.

I'll have a search through some of my Victorian resources which are not available online.  Not a quick process :)

It is probable the mother's maiden name was SPRATLEY.
That is what it is recorded as on the other 7 HITCHCOCK births.

I am searching to find a death for William McLEOD between 1878 and 1881.

Mary Jane had another little one in 1875

might have go look for his parents Mary Costigan & John O'niell..

Wonder if he's the one born 1863 who spend more time at the courtesy of Vic Gov Gazettes in jail for various things, regularly from 1895 onwards  - was in for 3 months for larceny in 1895... would make sence why Mary cuts him out of the family...

Sue [OP] have you used searching wildcards on the CD's.  His name may have been transcribed incorrectly.

I wonder if this is your man.  On online tree has his birth as 1841, Ireland.

9052 is the prisoner number.  Born in Antrim 1841, groom and sailor, single, no relatives in the colony, alias Alexander McKEEGAN.  It seems they thought he was the same person as Thomas REARDON but the personal details are almost completely different - born Dublin 1833, arrived on the Fairy Queen in 1862, a sailor.  Unfortunately the second record doesn't have a photo to compare, so who knows.  All of these are for crimes between 1871 and 1875.

Just put 9052 in the search box here:

http://beta.prov.vic.gov.au/explore-collection/explore-topic/justice-crime-and-law/register-male-and-female-prisoners-1855-1947

When name searching do not use the apostrophe, just type Oneill.

Sorry I missed your last post Sue.  Thanks Debra...that one eliminated.

Don't have time today to search for the elusive James.....many others are sure to help :)

I wish we had James' occupation.  Have you any birth certificates for the children?

Cheers

So when James married in 1887 1881 he said he was aged 40.  Is that correct?

Edit - I see the year was 1881 not 1887 as in the first post.

Hello Sue,

James O'Neill was my Great Great Grandfather (his wife being Mary Jane nee Hitchcock).  I found it very difficult to track him down, along with some of Mary Jane's history but with some help I have worked out a fair portion of it.  The breakdown of the relationship still eludes me....

My Grandmother was a MARRS, her mother being Mary Jane's daughter Mary Ellen.

Happy to exchange what information I have.

How are you related?

Geoff

Hi Geoff,
So Mary Ellen Marrs Nee O'Neill and my Great Grandfather William O'Neill were siblings, I have nothing on James O'Neill other than the information on his and Mary Janes marriage Cert, so any information you have would be great.

Ok so i found James O'Neill buried as a pauper no family in a cemetery in Heidelberg Victoria. There was a post regarding incarceration i cant find the relevant web sites was wondering if somebody could attach links so i could read would be interested to see if this was the reason for the estrangement.
Thanks
Sue
