Title: Cornelius Mahoney
Post by: puggypugs on Saturday 05 November 16 13:18 GMT (UK)
Hi
Looking for details for Cornelius Mahoney.
Looking for any entries to prove his  existance ;).

We have no birth date for him.  Family didn't talk about him at all so we know very little, only what we got from baptism and birth cert.

He is stated on certs as father to Mary Mahoney born August 1918, registered in Jan 1919 with birth given as Dec 1918.  Mary's mother Hannah Mahoney/Lane maiden name Murphy.

If any one can think of any reason why there would have been such a big gap between birth and registration would appreciate suggestions.  Address given as Bachelors Quay, Cork.  Occupation labourer.

We know Cornelius died but we don't know when.    I had thought that may have been the reason for delay in registration but can't find a likely death entry unless it wasn't in Cork.

Rumour had it that Cornelius died and Hannahs children Hannah born 1911 and Etta born approx 1908 were put in orphanage while Hannah kept Mary.  Possibly 2older brothers also put in orphanage Richard b.1906 and Thomas b.1907.  This would have put Cornelius death after 1917/18.  This is just family rumour however. Hannah ended up moving to Preston Lancashire we think abt 1932 then was in London according to 1939 register with Dau Hannah and Son Richard and showed as widowed.  By that time Etta said to have died.

I haven't been able to find a marriage between Hannah and Cornelius. He is potentially her third husband. 1st husband Dennis Lane Married 1896. 2nd husband Thomas Mahoney married 1906.  We wondered if she didn't marry Cornelius.

There was a possible entry for son Denis Lane in Irish army census in 1922 which gives next of kin mother Hannah Mahoney. Address for both is Evergreen St. Cork.    Checked this address out in 1911 census and bizarrely there is a Cornelius Mahoney and family (not mine) living in Evergreen Road which leads off Evergeen St but this may just be a big coincidence.  I had wondered if this Cornelius became widowed.  I do know in 1964 electoral roll in Essex Hannah born 1911 has a Mary Mahoney living with her that was supposedly a cousin.  There is a Mary Mahoney in this family in Evergreen but again may be a coincidence.

Would appreciate any help to find marriage/death/ any info for Cornelius. I know there's not much to go on and this may never be solved.  Thanks for any help.
Regards

There is a  1901 census for Roches Building with a Cornelious Mahoney born 1897 s of Jereome age 35 and Kate 30 which I'd also take a look at.

Thanks for replies.
Hi Maggsie
Thomas and Richard both born Mallow.  I found their baptisms on the website Ciderdrinker mentions. Thomas married Lilly and ended up living in Dagenham.

Hi Cider drinker,
Thanks for looking but my Hannah definitely Murphy.  I have the correct baptism for Hannah in Spa Glen 9th April 1911.

Thanks again for replying.

Don't know if you already have this but we like to confirm what we are told, (we just can't help it)
Hannah Lane/Murphy marriage to Thomas Mahony

Her father's name of Denis could prove handy when looking for other marriage.

Is this Thomas' death 1912
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1912/05361/4494823.pdf
Address Chapel Lane Mallow, they are not there in 1911 although there are Mahony's on the street, possible relations.
If that is the correct Thomas the next marriage has to be after 1912.

Hi Sinann
Thanks for that.  The marriage - yes I have that -yes it's correct. The death I found today funnily enough and have just found him in 1901 in Waterford, occupation merchant. According to marriage cert father Richard was a farmer. I found what I think is my Thomas family in Cork 1901.  Hannah had a child Mary in 1918 by husband? Number 3 so Thomas had died between 1911 and 1918.
Thanks again for looking.

Hi Sinann
The birth cert said he was a labourer.
Thanks for your help 😊

Pity, I was hoping for something distinctive than would stand out on a death cert.

Hi
I think I have found my Cornelius Mahoney death 1928 Cork age 56.  Haven't been able to attach.  It states informant was from hospital.  Can't work out which hospital.  It looks like B.M. Hospital Cork. Under the date it says this with r.d. After Cork.  Anyone any idea what hospital this might be.

Thanks for all help.

There seems to be two hospitals on the page the Bon Secours and his one.
I think the RD stands for Registration District.
Think it might be CM as the first letter looks like the C of Cork.

Possibly the County Mental Hospital, the next chap died from acute mania.

Hi Sinann
Thanks for all this.  The reason I think he is mine is because I found an Irish army census entry In 1922 that I think is my relative-Denis Lane.  It Says mother Hannah Mahoney and the address for both is Evergreen st- the same as the death entry.  I hadn't spotted the page on the death entries were all hospital.  Odd - as you say acute mania you would think would be a lunatic asylum unless it's like a paupers hospital.  Thanks for the link explaination.

Going back and forth through the pages there are lots from this hospital, it's in Rural No 2 of Cork Registration District but I haven't figured out where that is.
Most causes of death are TB.
Tried searching for some of the informants, there are a few recurring names but no luck so far.

The Evergreen St. logic sounds good.

I guess it can't be to far from the Bon Secours as they are in the same Rural 2 area.
Maybe the present day University Hospital.

Cork District Hospital is in Rural No. 1
