I am helping a friend with her tree and we are stuck with Naomi Pont.
She marries Owen Crisp Allen D1861 Cambridge
1871, 1881, 1891 she is with her husband and various children living in Cambridge. Her place of birth is twice given as Chatteris, Cambs., once as Cambridge. Her date of birth is 1830 to 1832.
Her husband's death appears to be registered 1899 London.
We can't find any trace of Naomi before her marriage, nor can we find her after 1891. Is anyone able to help?
Thankyou

So she was about 30 when she married - could it have been a second marriage? Have you seen either her marriage certificate or one of the childrens' births certificates?
-
Thankyou for your reply. We haven't those certificates - we are just at the beginning. I hadn't thought about a previous marriage - I'll start looking at the childrens' birth registrations.

Mother's maiden name is given as Pont on the birth of son Owen Ellis Allen in 1867.
-
The children on the 1871 census are all born after the 1861 marriage. However, on the 1871 there is also a niece, Sarah A Cox, aged 18. She is on the 1881 census with her parents. Also in that household is a sister-in-law of her father, Sarah Pont, single. So it looks as if Sarah is Naomi's sister and therefore Naomi's maiden name is Pont.

Thankyou AVM

That also means that Margaret Cox is Naomi's sister doesn't it? That means we are looking for a Pont family with:
Naomi born 1830
Margaret born 1827
Sarah born 1823
-
There is a Pont household in Cambridge in 1841 headed up by Samuel Pont, 40. It includes a 15 yr old Margaret Pont, but not a Naomi or a Sarah Pont.
Samuel Pont 56 and wife Judith 39 are still in Cambridge in 1851. She was with him also in 1841 - possibly a second wife given the age gap.
-
You're right Groom. I hadn't thought about Margaret as well. Doh!

Thankyou AVM, I'll have a look

Samuel's apparent marriages:
1. Margaret Drake, 14 Feb 1820, Chatteris (Familysearch).
2. Judith Howard, 1836, St Andrew, Cambridge (Pallot's Marriage Index).
-
AVM That looks very good. Drake is a name that continues in the family right up to my friend's grandparent.
May I ask where you found the marriages?
Thankyou

Naomi Pont, 27 born Chatteris, is lodging in Cambridge with Charles and Margaret Cox in 1851.
HO107/1760/392/11.
I've amended my earlier post to show sources for Samuel's marriages.
-
They may well be badly transcribed - Sarah Pont has been rendered as Tout by Ancestry for 1861
Indeed on the 1851 just posted above, Ancestry have her as Porst
-
she's with the Coxes on 1861 as well - as is Owen Allen. Her age is given as 37 - wonder if she lost a few years to be nearer in age to Owen? occupation is shoebinder

AVM Thankyou. I wonder why it didn't come up in our searches. Anyway, we have it now, thanks.

AVM thankyou for the sources and census. Mabel also thanks for the later census. I am struggling to find it on FindMyPast despite using various permutations but I'll record the reference (and mistranscriptions :)) and access it when I next have access to Ancestry.

None were baptised in Chatteris.
There is a marriage though in Chatteris on 14 Feb 1820 of Samuel Pont widower to Margaret Drake spinster botp. Witnesses James Allam, Susan Burling; Thomas Camps (who witnessed most marriages around this time). No earlier marriages or burials of a Pont.

PART and CAR on FindMyPast.
You do know that you can just input the Piece/folio/page numbers ...which were handily supplied. :)

Thankyou Bedfordshire Boy. That's very interesting. It looks as if Samuel was married at least 3 times.
Brie

Maureen, thankyou, I'll try again.
I did think you could find it through the reference and looked for a box to fill but couldn't find one. How do I do it?

On FindMyPast go to Search and then A-Z of Record Sets. Type in the record you want eg 1861 - the first record is the census. That then gives you the option of putting in the reference.
Just tried it with the 1851 and it works.
-
There is an earlier Samuel Pont marriage in Suffolk (place unspecified) indexed on Familysearch - to Eleonora Wright on 3 Jan 1814.
Added: the SFHS Suffolk Marriage Index has this marriage as taking place at Mildenhall.
-
Thankyou Groom, that is very helpful.
AVM, thanks, I'll look into that marriage.
I'm off to bed now, but thankyou all very much. My friend is very pleased with what you have found and says thankyou as well.
