Hi Everyone
Recently we discovered another cousin via a very good DNA match. His ancestor was the sister to my ancestor. The problem that we both face is that finding baptisms for either of our ancestors has been near impossible due to a variety of birth places being provided at marriages, deaths and births of their children. Both of our ancestors moved to New Zealand. Mary McArthur and Elizabeth Jane McArthur.
We have a death certificate completed by the undertaker which says Mary Mathieson nee McArthur was born in Ireland. It says her father was John McArthur and mother Jane Adams. Her father was a carpenter
The birth of her son in New Zealand an informant says she was born in Partick, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The informant was certified in writing by the childs father George Mathieson.
The marriage certificate adds no further information either way but the marriage notice in the New Zealand paper says Mary Mc Carter, third daughter of the late James Mc Carter of Partick, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mary married in 1867 so James had died before this.
The death certificate of Elizabeth Jane Franklin nee McArthur states she was born in Glasgow, Scotland.
On two of her childrens birth certificates her place of birth was Omagh, County Tyrone (Northern) Ireland
Elizabeth names one of her sons James. Her fifth born son was named John. Mary didn't name any of her children James or John but instead her husbands family were fully represented. Mary did name one of her daughters Mary Jane Mathieson and Elizabeth named one of her Elizabeth Jane Franklin
All that aside are records to prove/disprove the Partick connection available? Elizabeth was married by Banns in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. She was born around 1847 and Mary around 1844

Hi Ambly
Thank you for finding that. I also found on family search a number of McArthurs in Partick but these outlived my ancestor and some of these were born in Scotland in the early 1800s. Competing families isn't going to help my cause!
So the early McArthurs and Adams were born in Ireland but moved to Partick. Were there better opportunities in Partick? If the childrens births are correct this movement predated the Irish famine.

Hi, found a couple of things which may or may not help. Found this birth: Elizabeth McArthur baptised 25 March 1840 in Arboe,County Tyrone to Arthur McArthur & Mary. Then I found 2 births:
Jane Adams
baptised: 3 April 1820
Killinchy,co Down
father: James Adams
Mary Jane Adams
baptised: 9 October 1822
Killinchy,co Down
father:John Adams
then I found this: Jane Adams Hillsborough,co Down of Edenacullo, single woman, mother of Mary baptised 30 November 1834 at Hillsborough Church of Ireland.child's father is listed as James Mattieson
I'm thinking a possible connection. Kim

Hi blemdookie
Ive gone into ancestry and some of the people I am DNA matched to have family trees. What they have is that our McArthurs are from Ireland. None of them have a location in Ireland. All the people we strongly DNA match to have James McArthur 1 Jan 1810 - Bef 1867 as their ancestor and Jane Adams Abt 1810-1887. James was the son of John McArthur. Jane was the daughter of John Adams and Rebecca Stewart/Stirrat. I also have Janes death certificate in Scotland but cannot find James. James was listed as a joiner which may explain his travel between Scotland and Ireland
They only have the 3 sons and with very large gaps between the births so we know there are more children. They have no girls names in thier trees
John b1829 born Ireland
James b1836 born Ireland
David b1849 born Ireland

Hi Ambly
Ive spent the last month going through family links, family trees, Scottish records and the Adams and Mc Carters you found are all related
A number of the family lines (at least two female McArthurs) moved to New Zealand and multiple Adams family lines moved to New Zealand. Later in the 1890s some of those McArthurs who stayed in Scotland also moved to New Zealand.
We have genetically linked a number of people who have tested from these family lines. The difficulty is the Irish origins of the families
Blemdookie there is an Arthur McArthur who is the son of William McArthur and Elizabeth Nulon/Nielon. How Arthur connects to our family I do not know at this stage but his wife was Martha Adams who was the daughter of John Adams and Rebecca Stirrat who are also the parents of my Jane Adams who married James McArthur. All born in Ireland but who emigrated to Scotland in the 1840s and 1850s.

I'm hoping that someone can find the death of James McArthur between 1855 and 1864 in Scotland. I've tried a number of variants but not found the right person. James was born about 1810 in Co Tyrone
Is anyone able to have second look in case Ive missed something?
The three James McArthur death certificates Ive purchased list the following parents - Duncan McArthur and Elizabeth Dawson 1855, Duncan McArthur and Margaret Donaldson 1861. The third he is listed as single and no parents listed 1859
-
What about the James MacArthur no age or mothers MS died 1860 Patrick
-
Oops I missed it from my list. Id purchased it previously. Hes listed as single. Parents James Alexander (teacher) and Jean ?
Also James MacArthur. Died 1866. Son of James McArthur and Jane Sands. Son John MacArthur the witness. Married to Margaret MacNaugton.

Have you found them in any Scottish census
Could James have died between the birth of the youngest and 1855
Or in Ireland and his wife and children moved to Scotland
-
A possibility yes but the marriage of his daughter says he was late of Partick. One of his other children's marriage certificates in Scotland from 1864 says his father was deceased.
Finding them in the census has been difficult. I can't find them in the 1851 or 1861 census. They are in the 1871 census.
-
So he could still have died prior to 1855 Which then would mean you need to look at burial records and MI if they could afford a headstone
-
Thanks Wendy. Ive tried that in both countries but to no avail.
