Hi there, I am trying to get further back with this man. His name is Basil J Rickard (I'm pretty sure the J is for John). So far I know he was married to winifred G. Quilter they were married in June 1941 in Surrey. They had 3 boys, 2 born in Cambridge and the other in Tonbridge Kent. Winifred died in 1953 in Southwark, London.
I don't know where or when basil was born or died. I would like to find out who his parents were. I know winifred was born in 1914 so I'm assuming it could be a similar date.
I didn't know which forum to put this in as he seemed to move round lots. Sorry if it's in the wrong one as I don't know where he was born.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
vicky

The 1941 marriage certificate should list his father's name and occupation (unless illegitimate) and names of witnesses might find relatives. He's actually listed in the index as Basil J.D. Rickard.
There is a possible later marriage in Tonbridge 1955 with just the middle initial J.
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
You might get his full name and date of birth in the 1939 register (we aren't allowed to do lookups for it but Find My Past has it).
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register/what-is-the-1939-register
Using the 'free search' there is this result when searching for 'Basil Rickard'
Basil J Rickard 1914 Southend-on-Sea C.B. Essex
It's possible he was born outside England and Wales or registered under another surname.

Hallo, Vicky
I had a look on FreeBMD but there are several possible births (allowing for spelling variations), so that doesn't help much. It is possible that Basil amended the spelling of his surname from Richard or Richards.
The marriage certificate should give you the name and occupation of Basil's father. Once that is known, it should be possible to find marriages on freeBMD and check the wife's surnames against the mothers maiden surnames (after 1911) for Basil births to see if there is a match.
Sorry this doesn't help much.
Philip
There was a Basil J

This is great guys. Thank you so much. You've given me a lot to go on. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Vicky, I know this is an old thread but Winnifred Quilter was my dads eldest sister.

Hi Starcat,
That's very exciting. I was doing this research for my sister in law who is a granddaughter of Basil and Winifred, which would make you two cousins (1st once removed or 2nd?).
She'll be very happy about this as she doesn't have many family on that side.
Could you message me your email address?
Vicky
