Title: Another very long shot: Jane Thomson, aged 7 in Overgate Dundee in 1871
Post by: djct59 on Tuesday 27 December 16 15:30 GMT (UK)
The 1871 Census has a child named Jane Thomson living at 28 Overgate, Dundee, with her aunt Elizabeth and her husband David Stewart. Helpfully, her birthplace is listed as "England" which doesn't assist too much in narrowing down searches. Elizabeth Thomson was sister to my g-g-grandfather, so Jane was my great-grandfather's cousin. I cannot trace her elsewhere in the records because her name is a common one and I don't know who her parents were.

I can rule out Alexander Thomson as his wife gave birth to my g-grandfather in June 1863 and I know he was not a twin. This leaves John Thomson (b.1826), Archibald Thomson (b. 1835) and Arthur Thomson (b. 1837) as putative fathers. Last one seems the least likely as there is no trace of him in 1851. Does anyone out there have a possible link?

You don't give an age for Jane in 1871?

Annie

Edit Ooops, should read the title properly, sorry  ::)

Have you traced any of the siblings John Thomson (b.1826), Archibald Thomson (b. 1835) in Scotland, any marriages in Scotland?

Have you considered that Arthur may have had a job on ships by 1851 census & may have ended up in England?

Annie

I think she may be the daughter of Archibald and wife Margaret Lorimer. There is a Jane Thomson mmn Lorimer born sept quarter 1863 in South Shields( ref gro index). There was also another child, Mary, born in 1868 same mmn. In the 1871 census in South Shields there is a Margaret Thompson age 37, born Scotland, Joiner's wife, with children Margaret age 12 born Scotland ( Familysearch have a birth for Margaret, daughter of Archibald and Margaret nee Lorimer in 1859 in Edinburgh) and Mary age 2 born South Shields).

In 1871 Archibald appears to be lodging in Jarrow along with his 14 year old son. Both born Scotland. Archibald is a Joiner and shows as married and William is a Rivet Heater.

Roshinish: Arthur cannot be traced in 1851 aged 14; doubt he'd have moved too far south by then.

Isobelw: That looks a bit more plausible. I know Archibald and Margaret were in Dalkeith in 1861, but the family were largely maritime carpenters/joiners who moved round the seaports for work. Interestingly, though, Margaret was not with them in 1861, and William likewise might not be from the same family, as he's not with them in 1861. That family seems to have emigrated to NSW in the 1870s. Trouble is, there are so many Thomsons working as artisans in 19th century Edinburgh...

Archibald and Margaret did have a son called William in 1857 in Lasswade who would match the William in 1871. Can't find either Margaret (b1859) or William in 1861 which is a mystery. As you say, Archibald and Wife Margaret are in Dalkeith with no children listed.

Yes, I see his birth in Hawthornden on 29th March, eight months after his parents married. Wonder where he was in 1861 though?

Archibald ( born 1835) appears to have died in Southampton in 1896. He remarried in 1879 in Southampton to Jane Cox and they had a son Archibald de Beauly Thomson ( same middle name as his father) in 1879 in Southampton and a daughter Florence Jane in 1881. The family are in the 1881 and 1891 census in Southampton and Archibald Snr died there in 1896. His son Archibald de Beauly Thomson died in Lincoln in 1963 age 83. His will is listed on the Wills index on Ancestry.

That makes a lot more sense than the claim that he died in Australia, for which I could find no supporting evidence.

Many Thanks.

...and Florence Jane de Beauly Courtenay died in Southampton in April 1944, predeceased by her husband Henry Walter Courtenay.
