Title: ACHILL MAYO 1901 CENSUS OF IRELAND I can't find it! Help please.
Post by: Braytons on Thursday 29 December 16 11:06 GMT (UK)
Hello,  I am hoping someone can help please.

I have been using the 1911 Census of Ireland to find some of my Irish relatives who lived in Achill in County Mayo with great success.  However when I try to find Achill in the 1901 Census it does not seem to exist.  Am I doing something wrong or was it missed out or lost?

The family names are Sheridan and Mc Nally mainly.

Thank you
Braytons

Thank you.  Yes, my mistake in my question.  :-[  I should have been more specific.  The bit of Achill which seems to be missing is Doogort, which appears on the 1911 but I can't find it on 1901.  Most of the family were there as they had been there since the 1840's.

Comparing the 1901 and 1911 census the only townland missing from Achill DED in 1901 is Inishbiggle Island which in 1901 is under Ballycroy South DED-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Ballycroy_South/Inishbiggle_Island

Just see that you've added a bit more information. Doogart townland is in Slievemore DED in 1911. Doogort, Doogort East & Doogort West here in 1901-

Amazing aghadowey!  These last few weeks I have been round and round and up and down the various links and Doogort has evaded me in 1901 and in 2 minutes you have found it!  Thank you so much.

Not sure why you couldn't find it as it's right where it belongs- a quick search of 'sheridan' & 'doogart' should have gotten it right away.

Hi, while researching a book on my grandfather who was a policeman in Dugort/Doogort in Achill in the 1890s, I came across a Sheridan who was the proprietor of the Hotel there. He seems to have been a fairly go-ahead  businessman at the time as he promoted his hotel for tourism.

Hi Yes I am pretty certain that is the Sheridan family I am looking for.  Some members of the family appear in the Griffith Valuation living in Doogort, ? date.

In the 1901 and 1911 Census they are Church of Ireland and I "think" the family went to Achill in the 1840's with the Rev Nangle.  I am hoping to confirm that by finding the records of births and marriages of Thomas (1803) Margaret (1809 ) and Richard John Sheridan( 1807) and Mary Anne, his wife (1813).  I do not have a name of their father and mother, and can't figure out a way of finding it!  What I don't know is whether they were born in Mayo or in some other part of Ireland.

From your knowledge of research in Achill, have you found any particular records available which I might have missed?  1750 - 1870 ish?

May I ask, was your grandfather born in Achill or somewhere else?

Kind regards
Braytons

My grandfather was born in Kerry in 1871. He joined the R.I.C. in 1892 and his first posting was to Dugort. The R.I.C. had a policy of posting policemen away from their County of birth and even the County of their wife's birth.I do not have any access to or knowledge of any particular Achill genealogical sites. However www.irishgealogy.ie which you are probably aware of is very useful but is scanty for the period that you are looking at.

You  "think" the family went to Achill in the 1840's with the Rev Nangle.... so where was he from??

Rev. Nangle came from Dublin and formed a mission on Achill Church of Ireland mission.

What I do not know is whether the Sheridan's local Mayo/Achill folks or from further afield, and without things like birth records I do not know how to discover that.

I will scour www.irishgealogy.ie, thank you "patrick street" for that suggestion.

we arrived at the Slievemore Hotel dry but benumbed. "Mine host" of the Slievemore, one Captain Sheridan, is perhaps the best-known Boniface in the west of Ireland.......

Golly Hallmark where did that come from!  How lovely.

Thank you Hallmark, what a great copy.

Its also great to have found the Sheridan's on the 1901 Census with the help from aghadowey and mike christopher on here.

I am still trying to find earlier members of the family born early 1800s as above.  I don't know where to look for earlier records.

That is a great photo.

I wonder if the list of names are in date order.

Notice the Richard Brinsley Sheridan, I wonder if this family has links to the 18th century playwright of the same name?

I have not seen the wills before, I will study those tomorrow.

Reference the image you sent of the writing, I did not realise that was related to the wills.  Only when going through those did I put 2 and 2 together.  Thank you again and for all the other snippets.  I just wish I could go further back in time.

Yes you are better off going through Wills yourself as you might spot something others would miss.

You have Civil Reg starting in 1845, so to 1865 they are non RC's to use to your advantage  esp Marriages!

My GGgm was christened in Dugort in 1838. My family are related to McNally, Hoban, Sheridan and others. The Sheridans owned a hotel. The Hoban and McNally graves are my immediate family and I had extra names added in 2010 when I finally confirmed who was in them!
Our house is still in the family - it too was a hotel.
