Title: COMPLETE Thank you. Help deciphering place name in Galway, Ireland
Post by: haliared on Friday 30 December 16 00:53 GMT (UK)
Hi there,
I have a place I cannot decipher or find on a death record from Headford, Tuam, Galway, Ireland.
I think it begins with an 'E'.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Spent a bit of time looking for this place but no luck so far, can you give use the year or better still a link to the page so we can see if there is another example of it and have a look at the handwriting.

This might help...scroll down for parishes but there is nothing beginning with " e":

Thanks to both of you, I have also tried searching everything I could think of but I couldn't find anything either.
I can't post the name because it is for someone who died as a baby and their sibling is still living and it would cause distress to them.
I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Hello,

Can you cross reference it with other BMDs of family members around the same time? I think you would only get marriages and deaths though.

No, sadly I have tried that. The death place is not where any of the birth, marriage or other death places have been.
Ancestor hunting is very tricky!

Found the record, it does appear to say Emoon, there isn't another capital E on the page, need to look at bit more at that registar's writing.

If the family weren't from the area they maybe pronounced the name place oddly, but you would expect the registar to realise that.

Thank you so much for looking, I appreciate the help.
Emoon or Emson was as close I could get too, going by the handwriting comparison, but I can't find anything on either Emoon or Emson!
The informant of the death I don't recognise as a family member, they may turn out to be in the future, but I know it doesn't help things now.

The informant has the same address, maybe the employer, he might be worth a closer look if possible.

Thank you, yes I think that is going to have to be my next option.
Unfortunately as I know nothing about the informant other than the name it will be a lot of guesswork but hopefully I will find something.
This 'Emoon' place where the death occurred and the informant reside is not where the family are living as far as I can tell from other certificates, so I am wondering if it was a kind of hospital or similar. I did try and search establishments of that nature in the area, but again came up with nothing like it.
I'll let you know if I ever work it out!!

I looked at a marriage and births of children for the man that married a woman called Delia but no joy.

At least you know the child died near or in Headford, when and why, not bad even if you can't find the exact spot.

I was going to look at parish records for Headford to see if the name came up but they are not free online, I was thinking if it isn't an official name it may be an old name only that family use.
One of my families always use a place name that doesn't appear on any map or list, and I can only find it in parish records on their records and no one else, even people living in the area didn't know it, one historian had heard of it so we managed to pin it down  but only because it had a mill.

Following on from Sinann's lead, I too have found the entry, I think.

I have found an earlier death of someone of the same name (that's what made me check it) and the place of residence is given as 'Ummoon'. It may be coincidence. I can't find that townland either. :-\

Correction- it just came up on a map!

The earlier death I found concerns someone who is living in Beaghmore in 1911

I'm glad we found it. :)
I wouldn't have thought of looking at records like that, Sinann. Good idea!

I probably would never have scrolled down as far as U but just now I see it's listed as a locality on the OSI Mapviewer. I hadn't though of checking locality, I used to but got out of the habit, must start again.

After you said you had found the death record, I thought I would have a go too. Then just decided to look for a family name. Lo and behold, there was Ummoon mentioned!

I wonder if you have found a connection to that townland, haliared?

Thanks Glen. It doesn't show Emoon or Ummoon though  :-\ so wouldn't have helped at the time.

Hopefully Ummoon was some help to  haliared as there were people of the same name living in that area.

Thank you all, this has been a great help.
From searching others in that area it has become apparent now that this family is not the one I am looking for, but as we all know eliminating possibles is important so that we don't follow the wrong line!
