Hi everyone.
For context, the image below has been taken from the death registration of the couple's daughter Agnes who died in January 1878 in Carmyllie with age recorded as 61.
The mother's maiden name is shown on numerous family trees as McLEANEN. It looks like that spelling to me but I haven't been able to identify any other records for the couple and I wondered if anyone could see a variation on that spelling.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Looks like McLeanen to me

I agree that it is McLeanen. There would be a nmber of obvious variations of that surname -:
McClennan and McLennan are the first that come to mind ... :)
Have you looked on SP for a marriage between a Douglas Stewart /Agnes Mcl*n*n?

Ruskie,
I've booked you an appointment at the optician or suggest a new spy glass ;D ;D
Look at the image again ::) ;D

Just a thought, what if the informant was asked for maiden surname and if deceased, the reply being McLean and deceased???

I didn't want to mention that in case I'd really missed something there. :-\
I think Rosie and ruskie an right, the surmane really can't be read any other way.
I agree with Ruskie that the trick is to work out what is should be (or at least how it has been spelled on other records). I have tried numerous combinations of names and spellings on SP and other places without success. It looks like (from published trees) I am not the only one.
I will start a separate post with the known details in the Scotland section.

I do like your thinking there, but have not found anything that fits with that possibility either.

For now,
Have you tracked Agnes on census records to find where she was born?

Was Agnes married, if so, who to, when & where?
Who were the witnesses?
Who was the informant on her death?

Hi Annie
I'll start a separate thread in the Scotland forum with the known details as it may be seen by more people there.
