Title: Herbert William Griffiths, 1906, Shrewsbury
Post by: Mike Thw on Wednesday 11 January 17 13:01 GMT (UK)
I have a Herbert William Griffiths born Shrewsbury 1906; registered Atchem.
In 1911 he was with his Griffiths grandparents.

I have no idea who his parents are. Can anybody be of any help?
(My list of to-get Certificates is a bit loooong as it is  ::))

According to the GRO site there is no mother's maiden name given, therefore the chances are that he was illegitimate.

There are a few family members there so would be a bit hard finding the right parent

There is also another older grandson with them as well, looks as if his mother's maiden name was Wynn from the GRO site. Were there any older daughters shown in the 1901 census, if not the chances are that Herbert is the son of the oldest daughter shown in the 1911.

Going off on a slight tangent Groom - what GRO site gives the mothers maiden name, please?

www.gro.gov.uk

You have to register, but it's free. They have added mother's maiden names and ages of death on records before 1911, it used to be only after 1911, so it is very useful.

Thanks Groom - news to me!!

Back to the original string. My money's on Dorothy Griffiths, born 1889 as the mother of Herbert.
But maybe I'll have to get the BCert  :'( :'( :'(

Hi

1901 shows an "Emma 18" as another potential mother in the family.

"Emma" is a bit complicated and probably another string.

I think she may be Ellen Mary Mildred and leave it at that  ;)

Broom - back to the GRO. ( :) Thanks again for the info, found several Maiden names I hadn't got).

However, had one or two I tried with no Mother's maiden name. I "suspect" they may be illegitimate. Do you know if GRO has a rule: "Illegitimate No Maiden Name Given"?

Not necessarily a rule, but I've found that is usually the case.
