I am looking for a Laurence or Laury Flynn born Co Waterford 1818. His wife was Mary Flynn born 1820. He emigrated to Newcastle Under Lyme in England between 1840 and 1852. They had a daughter Bridget/Bridge born in Waterford and a Son John born 1853 (abt) in Newcastle under Lyme
-
Hello and welcome :)
Is Mary's maiden name also Flynn?
1851 shows all children born in Ireland including John aged 1 month.
Did that John die and then another John born in England?
Regards
Heywood
Added: I have seen the death of the first John now and the birth of the second one in the indexes.

Hello there
Thank you for replying.
I have no further info unfortunately but someone else's research/family tree shows Laurence & Mary having 2 sons called John so yes, that's what I believe could have happened
Thanks again
-
Do the family show Waterford as birthplace on a census? If so, which one please.
The birth certificate of John or Thomas who were born in Newcastle under Lyme would show you Mary's maiden name which might help with Irish research.
-
I keep forgetting that we can access maiden names from the indexes now.
The births of John and Thomas show mother's maiden name as Kearns.
-
Thank you so much. I couldnt see that info on the index -only the name of the child and family surname. I can now try and get a bit further hopefully before we travel to Ireland in July.
Thanks once again Tracey

It is a new feature.
Go to this site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
You have to register and to see the name you also go to 'order certificates online' but you don't have to do that. You just fill in the details and hopefully find out the info.
Does one of the children show they were born in Waterford?
I have looked but can't see any records for the family.
-
Thanks for that
No I only subscribed to the free trial on Ancestry.com so it doesnt show that information. Its just what I have seen on family trees of others
-
Hi
Could you possibly advise on how to now get to the next step of finding info about Laurence and Marys parents please?
-
The research would be in Ireland but you would need a bit more information really.
I have already asked where have you found a Waterford connection? That would be a start.
-
Someone else's family tree -I have looked at the 1851 census and it states place of birth as being "Ireland" so unsure where Waterford has come from but its in 3 family trees
-
I can see two trees which link him to Waterford.
One has him arriving in Tasmania; taking US citizenship and then residing in both those places. No evidence of being born in Waterford though.
A second tree shows other unsupported claims.
Published family trees are not reliable. Some people just lift information and do not try to verify their information.

Ancestry has some Irish records - births, marriages, deaths etc plus parish records.
There are Catholic parish records at http://registers.nli.ie but you need to know the place as these are not indexed.Ancestry and Find My Past have indexes for this site.
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ Is also a free site but the records will be later than you need.
If you could find marriages in parish records in Newcastle u Lyme, they may be annotated with information re baptisms - the place.
Just one thing- were the family Catholic though?
-
Thanks for the information. I did see a Laurence as died in Tasmania but the "Skerratt" ft has Laurence dying in Newcastle -U-L 1862 with a copy of the death register index. I thought I was doing too well. I will keep persevering and thanks again
-
I just added to the last post, were the family Catholic?
I am looking but not getting anywhere yet!
-
I presumed so but just because they were from Ireland. My Mother (deceased) always told me she thought her ancestors came from Co Mayo

Hi Tracy
My GGGrandfather was Laurence Flynn from Co Waterford. I think he was from the Lismore area as his Court records state he was from Carrignagour East, when he was sentened to 7 years transportation to Tasmania (Van Diemen't Land) for sheap stealing. The year was 1848 and he spent 2 years on Spike Island convict depot, before sailing to Tasmania in 1850.
In 1856 he arranged for his wife Mary (nee Lyons) and most of his children to join him.
He died in 1885 in Tasmania.
There could be a mixup in other trees if they haven't validated facts.
I don't know if this is the same Laurence you are researching.
I do not believe my Laurence went to England.
Cheers

Hello John
Thanks for the reply
I don't believe they are the same "Laurence". My Laurence emigrated to England and also died there. I have found out a lot more information since my last post and don't believe he was from Waterford at all.You seem to have had better luck with me in tracing people but I will keep trying!
