Title: 1851 Census Lookup
Post by: Jayson on Tuesday 17 January 17 14:42 GMT (UK)
I wonder if someone could help with this?

I'm looking for William Wilson.  So far I have only been able to find him in 1841 living at Alkington Hall, Alkington, Whitchurch.  He was aged 42 and a farmer.

Also in the household were Thomas Wilson, 25; Mary Wilson, 21; Martha Wilson, 19 and Kate Wilson, 17.  They were all said to have been born in Shropshire.  I'm presuming William was a widower as no wife appears to be listed on the census.

Also listed in the household was George Bayley aged 1.  I'm presuming he was the son of William Wilson's daughter, Jane, who married George Bayley, a draper, at Whitchurch in 1838.  I cannot find Jane or George on the 1841 census.

On FreeBMD I found a death in the Dec qtr of 1841 for George Bayley in the district of Wem.  In 1848 Jane married George Harris, a farmer of Wem.

Hope someone can help.

Jayson

This could be the death for William hence why you cannot find him in 1851

WILSON, WILLIAM       56
GRO Reference: 1847  D Quarter in WEM AND WHITECHURCH  Volume 18  Page 171

NB. The age of 56 is a little high compared with the given age of 42 on the 1841 census but you would have to see the death certificate to be sure. Wem is the correct Registration District for where they were living in 1841

Thanks very much, davidft

This certainly looks like it could be the William Wilson I'm looking for.  I'm not too worried about the age discrepancy because censuses do sometimes give contradictory evidence.

Looking at the baptisms of the children on familysearch it looks like the mother's name was Catherine. There is also a baptism of a William Wilson in Whitchurch in 1791 which may be this William

1851
Alkington Hall
Martha Wilson 1802 widow farmer 200 acres
Martha Wilson 1823 step daughter 1823
Catherine Wilson step daughter 1827
Barbara Wilson 1843 daughter
Thomas Wilson 1819 step son Farm bailiff.
Looks like William remarried and had another daughter before passing away

That seems right - birth D 1839 Wem and Whitchurch
George Bayley - mothers maiden name Wilson

Thanks so much everyone for all the information.

So William's first wife was Catherine? Is there a baptism date listed for Jane Wilson, she would be my great grandmother x3. I don't how old she is because her marriage certificates only say "full age".

Marriage bonds
William Wilson date of birth 1793 to Martha Broster widow aged 40 . 31st jan 1843
Grooms occupation .farmer
Residence Alkington
This must be the correct William and Martha the widow from 1851 census.
Only problem it says groom is a batchelor..

GRO Online shows George as being aged 27 at the time of his death.

I suppose the information on the marriage bond could be mistake as mistakes are sometimes made.  Every other particular seems to fit perfectly with what we know already.

Thanks Lee, and to avm228

If I have the correct family in 1861 then this is Jane's baptism in 1815 in Cheshire

William Wilson ofAlkington hall death duties and will etc, were all read in 1848 so the death in december qtr 1847 seems correct.
Both Martha and Jane were baptized 13 feb 1823 .

Great detective work, davidft

That fits because I have Jane with her second husband, George Harris, living at Wem in 1861 and her place of birth is given as Easton, Cheshire.

If you are a member of Ancestry there is a tree on there that has several documents that relate to William including his marriage, burial and will. they also have a copy of a marriage licence dated 1815.

If you are not a member of ancestry then some public libraries have a subscription and you may be able to view it there (there are apparently restrictions on what you can see on the library version)

Hello
William Wilsons executioner of will was James Wilson of Liverpool.
Looking at the 1851 census there is a James Wilson in Liverpool b1793 at Whitchurch.
I think this is the same James that witnessed Williams marriage..Baptism for James Wilson 28 july 1794 Whitchurch parents Thomas And Mary same as Williams.Sister Anne baptised same day.
Lee
I don't know how you would go about getting the will found info on findmypast .
Sure someone on here will know how to go about it.

Thank you everyone who has helped me with this.  I'm ever so grateful to you all.  I've learned so much in a sort space of time.

Lee, you mentioned the baptism of James Wilson in 1794.  Does the record say what his father's occupation was?

Hello
Unfortunately not,but James in Liverpool is most probably Williams brother.
James is a master butcher and has an apprentice John Wilson nephew born 1830 Whitchurch.
John was baptised 12th March 1830 parents William and Catherine.
I think i have the marriage of Williams Parents
Thomas Wilson to a Mary Boulton 16th sept 1777 Whitchurch.
