Title: CORBETT's in Shropshire
Post by: nice2know on Sunday 29 January 17 16:23 GMT (UK)
Hello everyone,
Wondering if anyone has any info on Thomas & Harriet Corbett, (nee Middleton)...(I'm a 4th generation Son after Thomas) They left on the Sailing Ship "Storm Cloud" with 2 young kids, for New Zealand around 1860. Looking for family history in England, so I can add to my Tree. I have all my family details of their decedents after their arrival in NZ., Anything prior is a mystery. I have bits and pieces of the Norman links and the Domesday Book etc way back in 1066 etc. ...Probably similar to most Corbett's - having this info but not much around 1700's and 1600's etc. and the life and times in England.

Regards to all,

nice2know

Welcome to RootsChat! ;D

Their marriage:

December qtr 1855
Tenbury Registration District     vol 6c, page 394

Corbett, Thomas
+ and on the same page +
Middleton, Harriet

Children (using the new GRO Index search):
CORBETT, BOWER        MIDDLETON
GRO Reference: 1857  J Quarter in TENBURY  Volume 06C  Page 246

There are lots of Thomas Corebetts in Shropshire!
So it would be helpful to know both their ages, and their father's names (if known)

Your Corbett family are in several trees on Ancestry.

One has Thomas Corbett born on 13 December 1829, son of Thomas (1804 in Merry Lees, Leicestershire) and Mary Freeman.

Worth taking out a trial membership of Ancestry?

I personally would be a bit sceptical about Family Trees. The only way to be sure of Thomas/Harrietts Fathers names/occp's is to get the Marriage Cert.

Another Tree has him born Northumberland to Thomas Corbett and Mary Bott
(This Thomas same place and date of birth as mentioned by chelpat)

Does anyone in your Family have his NZ Death Cert. It should have invaluable info on it.

From NZBMD;
1898/4779   Corbett   Thomas   67Y

From Cemetary Records;
Thomas was Buried Purewa 1898 and Mrs Corbet (Harriett) Tauranga 1892

Being born and bred in NZ I know how invaluable their Certs are.

Trish :)

Another point.

The Thomas/Harriett from Shropshire were still there on 1871 Census

On the "Storm Cloud" 1860 were;
Corbett   Mrs H and 2 children
Corbett   Ernest

Can you tell me the names of the Chilren you have born before Thomas/Harriett left England

And a least 2 born NZ to them please.

Trish :)

A sad side-line;
http://tauranga.kete.net.nz/remembering_war/topics/show/2245-eric-corbett-1886-1918

As Thomas was not with Harriett in 1861 Census did he leave for NZ earlier?

Headstone on Family Tree has them arriving 1860 so something is awry here.

Without Thomas's Marriage Cert to Harriett and his NZ Death Cert no one can be sure of his Parents and his pob.

OK, I made a mistake :-[

The "Storm Queen" arrived 1861.
So who was Ernest, a Brother of Thomas?
Or the young Son listed separately?

I don't know how old this post is, but here's an answer:

There are many records on trees online - but all those that I have seen have picked the wrong Thomas Corbett as the emigre!

I have a DNA match with a NZ 'Corbett' (my mother was a Corbett) - both I and the lady in NZ are descended from John Corbett (b. c. 1801 Clifton on Teme, Worcestershire) and Esther Evans (b. c. 1797 Worcestershire) my 3x great grandparents. John & Esther had 5 children including Thomas Corbett (b. 1821 bapt. 20 Aug 1821, Clifton on Teme, Worcestershire). It was this Thomas who married Harriet Middleton at Tenbury in 1855 and later emigrated to NZ.

This branch of the Corbett family were originally from Worcestershire (the John Corbett above's parents were John Corbett and Ann Purvey, this earlier John's parents were Thomas Corbett and Elizabeth Griffin). From Worcestershire, the family moved first to Wiltshire (via a brief stint in County Durham - my great-grandfather had his first headmastership in Barnard Castle) and then generally scattered - there are descendants of the family in Canada (BC) as well as in NZ.

Hope this helps.
