hi my g grandmother was arabella maddrell. her father was john maddrell born C1834 IOM. his wife was ellen/eleanor and was born 1832/1841. this is causing me confusion because of her different names and years of birth. my g grandmother was born in india while her father was living there with the army. he was with 39th regiment of foot, which later became dorset regiment i believe.
my problem being that i would love to know ellen/eleanor's maiden name. would anybody have any info that fits with mine??
thanks for reading

you're an absolute star! because of the qualtrough possibility, i had them living in Rushen IOM and i suppose i just stuck with that area. never thought that they could be from another part of the island.
can i join GRO and just look up stuff? it's where i got arabella's birth cert and other birth certs from but not sure what else to use it for....
thanks again

If you have already ordered from the gro then you can just log in using the user & password you had then. The site is primarily for ordering certificates, the recent addition which was used for their PDF trial means they have added the mothers maiden name prior to 1911 also the age at death before the mid 1860's. Where a child has died take care as some ages show as years when they should be weeks/months

Oh dear! ;D
Looking for a Christian on the Isle of Man is a little like looking for Williams in Wales, or Smith in England :-\
I have a friend who is a Christian, and I managed to trace his family tree back quite a way.
But it wasn't straightforward. ::)
There are 3 baptisms for John Maddrell in the 1830s?
12th October 1834 in Rushen
John Maddrell, son of John Maddrell and Margt (formerly Nelson)
17th May 1835 in Patrick
John Maddrell, son of John Maddrell and Margaret (formerly Quayle)
12th September 1830 in Rushen
John Maddrell, son of William Maddrell and Ann (formerly Turnbull)

Possibly a Church Record, known as a "Presentment for Fornication" would exist, in the which the father may be named ;D

hi and thank you for your efforts. i had a feeling it wouldn't be so easy. they had common IOM names, didn't they? also, the fact that they gave different years of birth too..
I think I may go down the route of tracing John Maddrell through the Army in India as Arabella was born out there, there may be something on her birth certificate?
I've also tried John Maddrell and Ellen's marriage on IOM as I would presume that they got married before travelling to India.
thanks again for your help.

Leave it with me.
I'll see if I can pop down to the Manx Museum library - I should be able to get the PR entry from the microfilms.

oh my goodness! thank you! really appreciate this.

There are some burials that might be worth researching?
Hugh Christian, age 6 weeks, Ramsey, 23rd September 1863
Hugh Christian. age 56, Ramsey, 7th May 1885
Both at Maughold parish.
-
definitely! thank you! ;D
-
if the age reported for John in 1881 is correct then likely to be s/o John Maddrell + Margt Nelson -
the John + Margt Quayle have a 3 yr old John in 1841 so looks as tho their 1st child died
marriages are usually in wife's parish - maughold includes most of Ramsey -
however can't immediately see a hugh (or Ewan/euan if Manx) christian in 1851 tho there is a Hugh that matches burial as a shoemaker in Ramsey
-
Hi thanks for this. There are so many possibilities when there are not a lot of surnames. I thought maddrell was so unique when I started, now there are so many on IOM!
-
hi again all
i have been looking on ancestry and there are marriage dates for john maddrell on 11th feb 1832. the records show the wife to be margaret nelson and margaret quayle, both in Rushen. could it be a coincidence that there were two john maddrell both marrying margarets of rushen on the same date?!
these are from the IOM marriage index. do you think they could have been badly transcribed?
thanks
Amanda
-
they match the two families - look at 1841 census John h/o margt quayle is a lead ore washer
john h/o margt nelson is an ag lab at Ballahaue in Rushen
you can check www.imuseum.im

Oooh intriguing....so I wonder which one would have been most likely to join the army - or was it compulsory?
