I just came across a really interesting article (including names and details) about Remittance Men who came to NZ!
Still looking for the arrival into NZ of my Early Settler William McAughtrie - but nope, he's not on their list, but hopefully it will be of help and/or interest to someone!
Cheers
Jeanne 😄

Thanks for that Jeanne,
One of those remittance men mentioned, Ronald TRUE went back to England and murdered a prostitute in 1922.

Ronald True also features briefly in my family history narrative. He was finally apprehended here in New Zealand after stealing a bicycle from my great uncle while he was in church. This was reported in the local newspapers. From petty theft to murder........
Minniehaha.

I strongly believe one of my Greats was in some form a remittance man. He was the bastard son of landed Irish Gentry and left a surprisingly large estate for a labourer from Featherston.

I have added the link to New Zealand Resources & Offers.
Thanks Jaybelnz!

Golly Spades, I totally forgot all about that! Thanks for reminding me! I hope it's helpful for some!
I really wouldn't be surprised to discover that my William McAughtrie was a remittance man, because when I spoke to one of his direct descendants, and asked how he got to NZ, he laughed "I dunno, he was a bad old bu**er, probably got deported!! I think I might go back to that site , I see that it has a question/ answer facility, and who knows what that might reveal!
Thanks again, and I wish you and yours a very Happy and bright New Year, 2019! 😀😀
