Title: The McBays of Arbroath
Post by: Arbroath Smokies on Tuesday 07 February 17 03:14 GMT (UK)
I am researching the McBay family that settled in Arbroath. The McBays had large families and the Scottish naming tradition was honoured. The result is so many people with the same names I can't sort out who is a direct ancestor and who is a lateral. I have a marriage certificate for James McBay born 7th of April 1848 at Dun. His parents were William McBay of St. Cyrus and Jane (Jean Wilson). Our ancestors were agricultural workers, and did not seem to have links to fishing like many of the McBays. And yet the christian names are the same as those of Miltonhaven and St. Cyrus. If anyone can trace this line  further back I would be very grateful!

Yes, I am still looking for information but I have not made much progress on linking the McBays of Arbroath to the St. Cyrus family. Please check out my findings on Tribal Pages: Bunning/McKenzie family. Look under M for the McBay link. I may have some details wrong and would appreciate any assistance. Three McBay sisters and two brothers settled in Canada in the early 1900's. My grandmother Isabella McBay died giving birth to my mother on March 23rd, 1919. Hope to hear from you. Isabel Bunning
