Title: Walcott family of Bitterley Court, Ludlow, Shropshire
Post by: Secretary Middleton on Thursday 09 February 17 11:54 GMT (UK)
We are looking to trace Walcot family members formally of Bitterley Court, Bitterley, Ludlow, Shropshire.
The Walcot family lived at Bitterley Court for 300 years or so.
They owned the right to appoint the rector (they have the "patronage" or the "advowson") of St Mary's Church, Bitterley.
Bitterley Court was sold to the Wheelers in 1898, however the Walcot family retained the right to appoint the rector.
The Diocese of Hereford only has the following information about the owners of the advowson: Walcot Family Trust c/o Morgans Solicitors, Mill Street.  Unfortunately Morgans has closed down and the business was bought by Lanyon Bowdler.  My employer has contacted them, but they have no records about the Walcot Family Trust.
Any information would be fantastic.

I've no idea about the items lodged with the solicitors, but from a search of the National Archives Discovery catalogue (which includes the holdings of other archives as well) it appears at least some of the family papers are at Shropshire Archives - see http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/c/F18566

Shropshire Archives should be able to give you more information about these items, including access arrangements etc. I haven't checked, but it's possible there will be a more detailed listing on their own website.

A piece in the newspaper Hereford Times 10th June 1899
Concerning the will of Rev John Walcot of Bitterley Court Estate (part of).
" The advowson and right of presentation to the living of Bitterley and all the residue of his real and personal estate he leaves to Owen Charles Bamfylde Dashwood Walcot."

Apparently some documents from Morgans Solicitors also made it to Shropshire Archives - see
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/rd/c66675ae-4f20-4a34-a315-d5ea7b2c6230 and
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/rd/113bb0d7-575f-4c5f-ae05-ef210a9e30a4

And Shropshire Archives do have an online catalogue, though sometimes it's easier to talk directly to staff who are familiar with the holdings.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitterley

Bitterley Court was the longtime seat of the Walcot family, who had previously sold their Walcot Hall to Robert Clive, known as Lord Clive of India. In 1899, Bitterley Court was purchased by James Volant Wheeler, younger son of Edward Vincent Wheeler of Newnham Court, Tenbury Wells, and remains in the ownership of the Wheelers to this day. Bitterley Court is a Grade 2* listed building which was extensively modernized by Thomas Prichard in the late 18th century and restored by the grandson of James Volant Wheeler in the 1960s, saving it from demolition at a time when English country houses were at risk.

"William Walcot was Charles I's page when he was beheaded and Charles gave half his cloak to each of his two pages on the scaffold. William Walcot's half was kept at Bitterley Court for many years with the Royal bloodstains preserved for posterity. Members of the Walcot family still visit Bitterley from all over the world and one of these still has the cloak."

(page 7)

The cloak is apparently on loan to Shrewsbury Museum.

There a number of interesting newspaper articles relating to the Walcott family on the Welsh Newspapers Online (free) website.

These may be found precisely by searching using the exact phrase: "bitterley-court"

Dear All
Thank you for your fascinating comments.  If anyone can suggest a means of tracing current living relatives that would be helpful.  The church is currently looking to appoint a new Vicar to the parish and the Walcott family do have an input into this.
Thank you
Anita

Reply by Richard Powell from Caynham. During my teens in the 1960's, l came across a book with a bookmark in it which was made of vellum! It was a last will by a person whose name I forget but the signatures at the end were Walcot and Mulholland dated .....1619!! That 'bookmark' I gave back to the rightful owner about 30years ago. She had all the documents for Caynham Court estate going back to the reformation. I believe Bitterley was originally in the parish of Caynham. I also believe those documents were lodged with Shrewsbury museum. Some of them have been read but many have not and there may be some interesting information yet to be found!

@Secretary Middleton,

I was given a tip off about this request from a relation today and I know the whereabouts of some of the Walcots, because my grandmother's grandmother younger sister, Mary the daughter of Sir Thomas Phillipps Bt., of Broadway, married the Rev. John Walcot, whose father was the Rev.Charles Walcot, who had married the daughter of Captain John Molyneux R.N. of Gravel Hill, Ludlow, my gt. gt. gt. grandfather's younger brother and the uncle of her mother Harriet who had married Sir Thomas Phillipps.
My grandmothers mothers sister also married Owen Charles B.D. Walcot and some issue are still alive today. Several years ago I had a farm near to Walcot Hall and later lived near Ludlow and know the area well. Their daughter Hester Walcot lived at Great Ness and her son Eric lived nearby, as did his children, whom I am still in contact with.
