Years ago after great effort, I found John Proudlock born in Ingoe 1812, away from home in the 1851 census. He was the husband of Isabella Proudlock living in Low Fell, Gateshead with their chn Lewis, Walter, Isabella, John, Robert, Anthony. I can't believe that I have no record of this, but I was not very computer literate then. I have searched on Ancestry, FindMyPast, the Genealogist, separately for Johns, Js, Proudlocks, *locks, Pr*locks, born+/- 1810, to no avail. But 10-15 years ago I found him with a family of a different name, as a visitor/ lodger and I think he was in a place beginning with E... probably in Northumberland. I am at my wit's end as to how to find him again. Have you any ideas? Can you help me find my great grandfather in 1851, please?

Just read your post again it's John the husband you are looking for not his family.
Must get these specs changed :)

Very true JJ! It's the errant husband who is elsewhere

Do you know what his occupation was?

pitman, coal miner, publican, innkeeper variously. At the time of the census, his wife was looking after the pub in Low Fell. it is a temporary absence from home.
