Title: Elizabeth Watkins 1783 Herefordshire
Post by: eileendavid on Tuesday 07 March 17 13:42 GMT (UK)
Elizabeth Watkins was born circa 1783 in Herefordshire

She married John Timms 13.02.1809 @ Aymestrey St John & St Alkmund Herefordshire.

She was on the 1841 Census as not from Oxfordshire as Elizabeth Timms

She died and was buried 24.06.1845 St Nicholas Astall Oxfordshire aged 62

I have found several Elizabeth Watkins and think she could be one of these but am open to offers if someone can find me the perfect solution to continue my history.

1. Elizabeth Watkins 02.11.1783@ Shobdon daughter of Thomas & Margaret nee Powell.
2. Elizabeth Watkins 23.02.1783@ Lyonshall daughter of Thomas & Ann nee Dale
3. Elizabeth Watkins 27.10.1782 @ Clodock and Longtown  daughter of James & Anna nee David
4. Elizabeth Watkins 23.02.1781 @ All Saints Hereford daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth nee Davis

All have pros and cons Shobdon is nearest church to Aymestrey named their first son Thomas although no Thomas previously in the Timms as far as I have found. No Margaret although she had 3 girls

Again Thomas but no Ann named. Church 9 miles away

Again a James named but no Anna. Church 34 miles away

This one All Saints two of her children named Thomas and Elizabeth.  All Saint's is 18 miles from the Church at Aymestrey but her son William Timms moved to this area and was on the 1861 census in this area.

Can anyone check the marriage in the parish records to see if this throws any light on the matter.

I don't know the area but have google search the distances.  I know the name of Watkins is quite prolific in Herefordshire but hope that someone else might be looking for the same family or that some kind person on this site can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for all previous help I have had and hope to count on in the future

Eileen

Hi Eileen,

I don't think I can shed much light on your conundrum just yet, but I had a look at the Pre-1837 Herefordshire marriages index (transcript). You sometimes get a reference to either the bride or groom's place of origin, and whether they were widowed at the time of the marriage. Unfortunately or fortunately, no such reference is made for either Elizabeth Watkins and John Tymns (sic), who as you said married in Aymestrey on 13 February 1809. Although I would not jump to any conclusions, there seems to be little to indicate either of them were married before or that they were from another parish, though of course this is possible. I would try and get hold of the original image to see if there are any side notes or comments which might shed some light on Elizabeth's origins.

I myself descend from the Watkins of Almeley, which is not very far from Aymestrey. There are a few Philip Watkins in my family, in case you happen to stumble upon any Philip Tymns/Watkins during your research that might be a clue!

Best of luck!

Thanks for getting back.

The Timms/Tymms with various other spellings were from Oxfordshire originally he was a stonemason. After the marriage the couple went on to have 8 children Thomas 04.02.1810 St Nicholas Asthall, William 12.07.1812, Richard 11.05.1816, James 13.06.1819, Elizabeth 17.11.1822, Clara 20.12.1825, Clam (male) 30.07.1826 and Mary 24.06.1829 all baptised at the Wesleyan Chapel Chipping Norton Oxfordshire.

With regards to the marriage there is only a transcription on FindMyPast and it's the same as the LDS

I found a family of Watkins from Aymestrey the father was Paul Watkins mother Sarah Evans.  They had 7 children all baptised at Aymestrey but unfortunately not a daughter Elizabeth. This couple had also married at Aymestrey 22.03.1783.

Paul was one of the sons of Paul Watkins and Margarett Griffiths who was born at Lingen (6 miles from Aymestrey).  There were 4 boys Paul 03.11.1745, John 28.12.1746, Walter 22.01.1748 and Humphrey 05.04.1751 all baptised at Lingen.  Their parents married at Aymestrey 17.12.1744

Don't know if one of the other sons could be Elizabeth's parents.  John I think married Mary Pope at Lingen 18.05.1782

The name Watkins seems prolific in Herefordshire though so very difficult to find the correct branch

Thanks again  ???
