Title: Breen
Post by: tresario on Tuesday 07 March 17 21:35 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information on the Breen family. Elizabeth and Cathleen were born 1935 and 1937(now deceased) to Thomas Breen. There was also a son Thomas who died at some point. They attended school in cashel.
Around 1946 their dad moved them to Mullingar and he married a Margaret Egan.
I don't know the maiden name of his first wife the girl's mother. I don't know if they originally came from Tipperary. I only know for definite they attended a school there. Which one I don't know.
DNA has been competed, uploaded to gedmatch and also family tree DNA. No close matches though. Plenty of 4th n beyond, but no name matches.
Has anyone got a polished crystal ball that could offer any advice please.

Bit of a breakthrough overnight, Thomas Breen first wife was cAlled Margaret and  their daughter Kathleen Mary might have been Mary Kathleen.Thomas died in 1964 in Mullingar.
No one knows if he was a Tipperary man, or Margaret. Just that the girls attended school in cashel. They are Catholic, so I would imagine that it would be a Catholic school they attended.

There are a few marriages to Margaret's in the time frame, on IrishGenealogy, you would than need to cross reference their surnames with births on Family Search
Knowing his job would help.

For example a possible, Thomas Breen to Margaret Keenan1935
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1935/08934/5231330.pdf
Possible Children
Elizabeth K in Balrothery 1935
Female 1936 Dublin

There is a 1947 marriage in Mullingar of
Thomas BREEN and Margaret EGAN Q1 V3 P155

If the children were born as late as 1937 this implies his first wife died between 1937 and 1947
Irishgenalogy.ie gives 23 deaths in this time period of Margaret BREEN

Was Thomas a soldier? as this is the best match I can see LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1942/04690/4251014.pdf)
even though it is in Balrothery (Dublin); married lady aged 28 in 1942

If you search for marriages for a Thomas BREEN from 1925 to 1935
There are only five with a spouse named Margaret

Thomas BREEN m Margaret KEENAN on Feb 07 1935 in Balrothery LINK (https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/91b31b6633412?b=https%3A%2F%2Fcivilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie%2Fchurchrecords%2Fcivil-perform-search.jsp%3Fnamefm%3Dthomas%26namel%3Dbreen%26location%3D%26yyfrom%3D1925%26yyto%3D1935%26type%3DM%26submit%3DSearch)
Thomas was a Battalion Policeman

This couple had children that match the names you are looking for LINK (https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Abreen%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1930-1942~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Akeenan~%20%2Brecord_country%3AIreland)

apologies to Sinann for some overlap  ;)

Thank you so much and sincere apologies. Yes that is Thomas Breen in Patrick Street Mullingar that died at the hospital 5th July 1964 aged 60. Says farm labourer.

It was Mary the first wife they are saying now and Margaret Egan is the second wife. Im so sorry and you did a great search for them too. Thank you.

I thought that it could only be after 1937 when Cathleen was born, but im not sure if Thomas was the youngest of the 3 or where he fits in.

The girls went to school in Cashel. I am in Turkey and Family search wont let me access their records. I had a VPN, but Turkish gov have blocked them. Election soon!

Breen is a common name in Tipperary
It may be that the girls were sent to live with a relative if their mother died young
Hope the phone call gives you added info to help

Thank you for your help. There wasnt much information after all. I can at least move forward with the keenan/Boylan side. The DNA matches are only as close as 4th cousins, so still lots to work through and hopefully we will find something about Bernadettes dad.
Thanks again.

hi Sinnan
I didnt, as it says the name of Thomas breens dad on first certificate to Margaret Keenan. Also I live in Turkey, so its not so easy. I can see why having the egan/Breen certificate would be useful for cross matching and checking names though.

I must have missed a bit, I thought you said Margaret Keenan was incorrect as his first wife was Mary.

Hello
When michal keenan married in 1907 . It says he was a minor. Catherine Boylan was full age. Im trying to work out his age to find  their birth records. What age is a minor from in 1907, 16, or 18 ? Full age being 21 for catherine? Both had dads called patrick..
Seems michael keenan was a popular name  :-*
