Aged 69 at death in 1915 so 1846 seems about right https://s3.amazonaws.com/bg.ami.com/headstones/images/20160106/15495918.jpg

There's a Joseph Squire in the 1861 census in Bedford, in lodgings. Aged 14. Born America, a US citizen.

Thats very interesting i wonder what he was doing in Bedford at that age...I still find it puzzling that i have toronto canada listed as his birthplace on his sons marriage cert

If he was a US citizen it would be easier for him to settle in New Zealand if he said that he was Canadian.

I can see that there is a baptism at Bedford St Mary in 1853 but there is no corresponding birth registration. In the transcriptions I have seen there is no indication of the child's age.

It might be an idea to ask someone to take a look at the register page to see if there is any more information given.

Steven Gibbs has transcribed this register page and may be able to help.
http://www.stevengibbs.me.uk/HomePage.htm

His transcription includes an address (Grey Friars)
http://www.stevengibbs.me.uk/Bedford-StPaulBaptisms-3.htm#R1498

I cannot find a matching family in any census.

Late off Bedford means he lived there previously, not that he was born there.

1851 Census
Bedford, Bedfordshire
HO107/1751/699/52
John Corby, 32
Betsy Corby, 34
Alfred Corby, 7
John Eh Corby, 1
Joseph Squiers, 4, Visitor, born Canada********

As ShaunJ pointed out he is with the Corbys in 1861 also.

Trish :)

I don't know Bedford at all. Could the Corbys' address in Union Street be in an area known as Grey Friars or Greyfriars?

Greyfriars Walk is in the same parish as Union Street (Bedford St Paul)

Greyfriars stops at Bromham Road, and continues north of Bromham Rd as Union St.

I don't have any more information on the 1853 baptism than I transcribed, nor have I found any other links to the family. Sorry.

There is a widowed Ann Squire in Bedford in the 1861 census that might just be a possibility. (Born c1823 Campton)
