Title: Theodosia Howell and Abraham Richards, Tenby
Post by: Jules1066 on Saturday 18 March 17 08:13 GMT (UK)
Trying to find out more about Theodosia Howell and Abraham Richards, married Tenby 1796. They had at least 5 children including Sarah, Rebecca and Ann born around 1800 Tenby.

I'm assuming they originate from Wales, theodosia from Tenby and Abraham from  Lawhaden. Two of their daughters settled in Somerset and Dover.

It would be great to learn more about Theodosia and Abraham.

Thanks

Abraham Richards
Wales, Pembrokeshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1912
age 88
birth: 1753
burial: 11 February 1841, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales

So quite old when they married if right couple.

baptisms of children in Tenby
Sarah 13 May 1798
Elizabeth 10 Nov 1799
Mary 23 Jan 1803
Anne 11 Nov 1804

Rebecca is not theirs, it's a mistake in transcription. If you check the register for 4 Nov 1804, Rebeccah was the daughter of Wm Leach & his wife Mary.

Have checked the baptismal registers for St. Mary's, Tenby

Nov 13 (1753), Abraham son of Abraham Richards, labourer and Elizabeth his wife was baptised.

The baptismal registers go to 1767 - unable to spot a baptism for a Theodosia up to that point. Post above has possible census entry "born outside county"

Thank you all so much 😀
All these details appear to fit (I know you should never guess! But I have a good feeling about this latest data).

Poor Abraham missing 1841 census is a little disappointing, but I'm delighted to have more dates / names.

Ann used the name Ann Richards when she married, but I note the baptism
index captures the name as Ann Abraham (Ann Richards) as per Welsh naming tradition.

There is another daughter Hester Richards.  She lived in Somerset with her sister Sarah Richards who married John Carter - England census 1851-1871. In 1871 she was 69 suggests born 1802 not 1898. Are there two families with similar names in Tenby registers (e.g. Children of Richard Richards)

Find my past have record Sarah Abraham baptised 1801....not 1898 so it must be right children linked to 1851- 1871 😀

Mmm ???, there are two baptism dates for Sarah Abraham/or Richards 1801 (Richards…1798 (parents Abraham and Theodosia, Tenby) and Sarah Abraham 1801 (parents Abraham and Theodosia, Tenby).

Did the first Sarah die?

Still can’t find Hester to Esther….

I think the baptism records I’ve found are all linked to 1851-1871 census, and I very much appreciate all the other details everyone has found.

Baptisms Indexed under name Richard:
John - 23/12 / 1795 (Dosha and Abraham)

Sarah 13/5/1798 (Losia and Abraham) -
MAYBE THIS HAS BEEN INDEXED WRONG = Hester???

Elizabeth -10/11/1799 (Eudosia and Abraham)
Sarah - 5/8/1801 (Dosha/Doshu/Eudosia and Abraham)

Baptisms Indexed under name Abraham:
Elizabeth -10/11/1799 (Eudosia and Abraham)
Mary - 28/1/1803 (Eudosia and Abraham Richards)
Ann - 7/11/1804 (Eudosia and Abraham Richards)

I can't see a burial for first Sarah, but there are 2 baptisms

May 13 1798 Sarah daughter of Abram Richard by Theodosia his wife
5 Aug 1801 Sarah daughter of Abram Richard by Dosha his wife

The register does not show baptisms using patronymics and indexing on FreeReg is the same. FamilySearch may have a hangover from the old IGI which showed baptisms in a patronymic form whether or not it was still in use in the parish.

Thank you for the two sibling details and link to Abraham Will. This is a steep but enjoyable learning curve for me in terms of researching One's Welsh ancestry.

I'm very intrigued abt details in Will.

It's always been a mystery how Abraham's youngest daughter Ann Richards may have met her Dover-based husband. They married in London, and their children were all born in Dover.
