Title: Boswell family
Post by: Kelly.e on Tuesday 04 April 17 00:01 BST (UK)
Hi all.. I am trying to do my family tree AGAIN... 4th time lucky.... is there anyone can can give me some info on the Boswell family, before the date of 1909... my gran was Charlotte Harris born 1909??? My grandfather was William (toolbag) Boswell born 1906, Eastbourne???  All I know of my great grandfather, is that he was known as OLD TOT BOSWELL... they were of Romany Gypsy decent. Is there anyone that knows what TOT may have stood for??? .. other names related that we think, are LEE, JONES, RIPLEY, HARRIS. Also I am told my great grandmother LENA? SELINA?? Jones was taken and buried in St Albans... any info would be greatly appreciated. X thank you x

If Charlotte  Harris was born 1909 there are only 2 listings

1909 Sept quarter Charlotte Ann Harris mother's maiden name Western ,Plymouth

1909 Dec quarter Charlotte May mother's maiden name Finlay, Fulham

Where was she born?

You can access www.freebmd.org.uk to search for births Boswell with maiden name Harris, there are at least 6 I have found born in Faversham Kent who may belong to your family

You haven't mentioned if Selina married but I can only find one death for Selina Boswell born 01/06/1928 and died March 2001 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, did she marry ? Jones?, if so can't find a death so far

Happy hunting

TOT, years ago anyone being a dealer was called a totter, if this family were of Romany decent do you think this is a possibility that he was  a dealer of some sort, have you accessed this family on any census to find out what they did for a living

Hello Kelly.E!  Welcome to Rootschat!

There is a forum on Rootchat for travelling people, and within that forum, there are very many active Boswell family researchers. I'm not knocking Lisa and keyboard's suggestions or assistance in any way, but it might be an idea to ask a moderator to transfer your enquiry to the Travelling People Forum!

You will see a wee note  - "report to Moderator". at the bottom right corner of my post.  Click on that and you can ask for it to be transferred if you wish!

Happy hunting and good luck with your research!

JB 👍

Is this still being followed as ive done quite a lot of research on this family,on both the Boswell and Harris side.Im from Faversham myself, and my mums friend and next door neighbours mum is one of these Boswells, her dad was a Ripley.Coincidentlly, our neighbours on the estate where I grew up was a descendant of Charlotte Harris(Lottie),and a cousin of my mums present neighbour. You probably know that Lottie is descended from the Rossiters.

I will post what I have if its being followed, but theres a fair bit,and I dont want to waste my time.I made that mistake a few years ago and a different post.

Hope to hear from you.

Have you checked the 1939 register

Is it possible that William Boswell "Old Tot Boswell" was born Battle, East Sussex, 1904 and that his mother was a Lee?

How sure are you he is the Eastbourne born man?
