Title: Lindley Family - gold miners
Post by: daisynook on Sunday 16 April 17 12:01 BST (UK)
I have a 1911 Canadian Census marking Joseph and Walter Fred Lindley as gold miners.  The heading of the Census shows British Columbia - Rossland City Eastward.  I know they eventually came back to England but wondered if anyone could tell me where to look to find out any information on where they worked and what caused them to come back?
Any help appreciated

Hi,

Do you mean Lindsay and not Lindley?
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=59398

Rossland had many independent mines, but amalgamation started in 1905, to become Consolidated Mining and Smeltering Co. (Cominco). See here

Walter F Lindsay   28 Born England. Imm 1906. Farmer.

Happy Easter Sandra  ;D

Perhaps a reason for their return was, Saskatchewan suffered numerous droughts (1917-1926)
(1929-1937), devastating for farmers.

1921 Census  for the Lindsay family - splits them up onto 2 separate records - although they are all in the same household - so it is a little mixed up.

Era Lindsay   59 Born England. Farmer. Own Farm.
Francis Lindsay   58 Born England. Wife
Walter Lindsay   30 Born 1891 England. Son. Single. Farmer. Son.
Joseph Lindsay   27 Born 1894 England. Son. Single. Farmer. Son.

Frank Lindsay   24 Born England. Imm 1907. Widowed.
Francis Lindsay   21 Born England. Imm 1907. Daughter
Marjorie Lindsay   1/12 Born Saskatchewan 1921. Grand-daughter

Interesting obit - Irene Muriel Mcdermott  (nee Lindsay) - December 28, 1930 - December 6, 2009

Irene Muriel McDermott was born on December 28, 1930 to Frank and Idress Lindsay of Arborfield, Saskatchewan.  She was the second eldest of six children. etc etc

Hi,

I found a short obituary for Eli Lindsay in the Lethbridge Herald, November 26 1968, page 18.  It says he was 109!!!!!!  He would have been 110 in Feb.  He died at his home in Arborfield, Sask, about 90 miles east of Prince Albert.  He was a pioneer district farmer.  His survivors include 33 grandchildren, 96 great-grandchildren and 23 great- great-grandchildren.  He came to Canada in 1906 from Hedensford, England, and first settled at Rossland BC, where he was a miner.  He moved to the Arborfield district in 1911 to homestead, and retired from farming in 1931.  He is also survived by 3 sons and 2 daughter (they aren't named in the obit).

Found another article in the Lethbridge Herald... Feb 29, 1968.  It says "Ex - Creston Man Celebrates Birthday".  It is from Arborfield... says Mr Eli Lindsay spent his 109th birthday at a tea party at his son Walter's place (the family homestead, near Arborfield).   It says Mr Lindsay was born in England and spent 40 years working in British coal mines before emigrating to Rossland BC in 1905.  He moved "here" (Arborfield area) in 1910 and farmed until he was 75.  He is still in good health.

Thank you so much dbree you have given me some interesting information to read.  Sorry I had got the name slightly wrong, they are Lindsey family.  Also Sandra and RunKitty for all your posts I have just seen.  It will take me a little while to assimilate the information - the first person I can't place is Eli or Era Lindsey.
I have Frances Sarah (Fanny) Lindsey married George Lindsey in England 1882.  It looks like she went to Canada with two sons Walter Lawrence Fred Lindsey, Joseph, Alfred Ernest and daughter Frances Ada who married Robert Scowcroft in Canada.  She left other children in England Sarah Ellen, Robert and George.
As you say it looks like they all stayed in Canada but I have Frances Sarah (Fanny) whose maiden name was Mcmullen marrying again to Francis Cox in England in 1899.  I'm wondering if my Frances's are getting mixed up as her daughter was Frances Ada b.1887 or maybe I have the wrong Frances in England but who was Eli?
I have had problems before with names being changed or nicknames used Sarah Frances McMullen was called Fanny in many places.
Another interesting piece is the obit for Irene Muriel Mcdermott  (nee Lindsay) is a clue as another branch of our family are McDermotts!
I have a lot to think about at the moment but thank you all very much for what I've received so far.

I have been researching Eli Lindsay and I realise they are a different family to who I am looking for.  Very similar but my Frances Sarah Mcmullen Lindsay was married to George Lindsay m.1882 in Manchester and although some of the children's names were the same it is just a coincidence. Maybe they are connected in some way but I can't make the connection.  My Lindsay family originated in Cheshire, not Staffordshire and I have a death record for Sarah Francis of 1930 in North Manchester.
I believe her daughter Francis Ada stayed in Canada and was married to Robert Scowcroft.

Crumbs - so this is your family - Manchester Lancashire 1891 -

Sarah E Lindsey   1 born Manchester. Lancashire.
George Lindsey   5 born Manchester Lancashire.

Frances remarried to a Francis Cox - Famiy on 1901 census Manchester Lancashire

Francis Cox   46 Frances Cox   31
Sarah E Lindsay   17 Walter Lindsay 8
Alfred Lindsay   7 George Lindsay 14

All the family in Manchester 1911

Therefore this must be a possible for the death registration for George - born 1860 - died aged 38 years - Q2 April/May/June 1898 - Manchester Lancashire - 8d 186

Frances Lindsey and Francis Cox marriage - Q3 July, August, September 1899 - 8 d 379

Doesn't look as if they ever left England. Couldn't find a Joseph belonging to this family though !!
Birth registration of  Walter Lindsay - Manchester    8d   310 - doesn't show a middle name of Fred.

The death registration for Frances Ada Scowcroft nee Lindsay ( born 10 September 1899) passed away in California 16 September 1985 shows her mother's maiden name was Law  - father Lindsay - so you were way, way off the mark and following the wrong family.

I wonder if anyone can help me sort this out?  I thought it was simple that I'd just confused my Fanny Lindsay, Cox family as there were many names the same but alas I'm still having problems and think that maybe they are still connected to the Canadian family.  Could there be so many names and connections with the same name?  I've spent most of the holiday weekend looking them up.  I have confirmed that Fanny was married to George Lindsay in Manchester 1882.  He died 1898 and she arrived back at Liverpool from Quebec on ship Lake Huron 1898. I have confirmed she married Francis Cox in Manchster in 1899.
One of the daughters Frances Ada Lindsay was definitely living in Canada in 1899 and married there.

The Frances McMullen who married George Lindsay in Manchester in 1882 had 4 children as shown on the attached table.  I think the Frances Lindsay you have visiting Canada is some other person with the same name.  I do not show Francis Cox in the table, but there is no doubt he was married to the Frances shown there.  Sarah Ellen Lindsay married either John Edward ANSON or Joseph MASSEY in Manchester Jan-Mar 1910.

The spreadsheet in reply 39 repeats the transcriptions already given in reply 34 and 35 and contravenes RootsChat Copyright Policy by quoting the 1911 census - 1911 transcriptions are not allowed.

The 1911 Canadian Census quotes a Walter Sanderson as spouse of Frances Lindsay and father to Walter, Joseph and Alfred but that would appear to be a possible error. The 1916 Census Arborfield 02, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan showed that Frances was still married to Eli - but you do not now think it is your family.

Reference - reply 38 - The census you quote in your reply 38 is the 1911 census of Kootenay British Columbia not England.

Quote :- One of the daughters Frances Ada Lindsay was definitely living in Canada in 1899 and married there.
1911 Census shows family including Walter Fred in England

Frances Ada Lindsay was the daughter of Eli and Frances and you say this is not your family  -   This shows her baptism - Female - Baptism Date 24 Sep 1899

Mother: Frances

Think you are still very confused.

Thanks for all your work Sandra.  I agree Frances Ada is not mine and yes the entry for Walter Sanderson is obviously wrong.  Frances was not his wife she was travelling just with her children.  I think the entry for Ada's parents Frances and Eli clarifies they are definitely not the same family.

Not really! :-[  From your previous posts of the Lindsay family on Census in Manchester if looks like there was just the 4 of them Sarah Ellen, George, Walter and Alfred unless there was any more who came along later.  I doubt it as George Lindsay died in 1889 and Frances remarried in 1890 to Francis Cox who I believe already had 3 children from previous marriage.
It all gets very complicated when in those days they used the same names over and over and all remarried!!
Thanks again

Thanks again so much Sandra for you help and marriage cert.  I've just updated the Anson family.  Its very strange that the daughter Hilary Gee Fosbrook ended up in Canada again, that connection.  There may still be some family connection!!

Maybe a good idea to contact the ancestry tree owner to compare notes. Although they have a positive date of death for Irene Anson Gee, they are not quoting the correct birth year - 1918 instead of December 1914  ::)

Hi!
I have been doing my family tree as we know we are related to Eli Lindsay but not sure how. We had a newspaper cutting and I've managed to find out through researching that he is my 3rd great uncle!
