Title: Elizabeth O'Brien (Cissie)
Post by: GeriK64 on Monday 24 April 17 13:46 BST (UK)
Hello,
I'm trying to find any marriage or death records for my grandmothers sister Elizabeth O'Brien known as Cissie, I have her on the 1911 census residing in Westport, aged 7, but cannot find any other trace of her.  Any help would be appreciated.  ;)

Is this her
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Westport__Urban/Cloonmonad/749106/

What was her father's name and was he still alive?
His information is need to confirm any marriage record found.
This would be the place to have a look
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

Although she may be too young to appear in those records and if she moved it would be difficult to know where to look.

I can see a marriage for brother Daniel. Is your grandmother Marie in the census? Did she move away? I wondered if the girls left in adulthood.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I have all the information on the rest of the family, she returned with her mother Lizzie and twin brother Daniel from South Dakota as her father was killed in an accident in the homesteak gold mine.  Lizzie remarried a Lambert and moved to Scotland.  Daniel and Cissie stayed in Westport, or at least I thought she stayed in Westport, now I'm not so sure.  I have tried the civil records for a marriage but no luck.

I appreciate everyone's help   :)

Apparently Daniel married 'somewhere',...... so could she have been there with him?? Maybe she married at this 'somewhere' too!

Hallmark,

Here is the 'somewhere' in Westport

As I wrote, I can't see a record for Elizabeth there as yet.

Hi Hallmark,

Daniel married in 1936 Westport, this was the family home.  I couldn't find any record of a marriage for her.

 :) :)

Have you tried Scottish records? Maybe she moved with her mother.

Hi Heywood,

Thanks, yes I'm in Scotland as my grandmother Marie, came over with Lizzie her mother. Cissie and Daniel stayed in Westport.

Do you have Daniel's death in Westport?
Any obituaries?

Do you know a time period for when Lizzie and Marie went to Scotland
This would be a starting point for knowing when Cissie was still living

There is a possibility that she never married or indeed became a religious
Also, as with one of my elusives, changed her name!

Maybe it would be worth looking at the Walsh family from 1911 census Elizabeth may appear as a witness or informant on one of their Certs.

Hello again,

You are only asking re Cissie so perhaps you are still in contact with family in Westport? Although, if you were you would know about her, wouldn't you. ;)
They were remembered in masses in 2015 - http://www.mayo.ie/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/WESTPORT-PARISH-NEWSLETTER-11-19-april.pdf

and here are photos of the grave of Dan O'Brien, Westport - possibly/likely to be him.

there are two, the one linked and the following.

very good Heywood
Obviously someone in Westport quite recently was thinking of them

I had thought looking at the photo of the grave that Cissie may have been the nun but the mass remembrance would have referred to her as Sr. I am sure if this was the case

That's what I thought. They have mentioned the widow so surely a nun relative would have been named.

Also, myluck, in the memorial mass, she would have been referred to as a religious, wouldn't she.
You said that already  ::)

Possibly she would have been named but she could have been visiting and therefore not known
But she also may have been Dan's daughter

editted to add
Just noticed that one of the servers named on that Mass leaflet was named Ava Lambert

Also the bulletin for 24.04.2011 also remembers them LINK (http://www.westportparish.ie/images/stories/newsletter/WESTPORT_PARISH_NEWSLETTER__DRUMMIN__24_04_11.pdf)
I would take from this that there is some one who has a mass said every year and the parish maybe able to help put them in touch

Just to note this person may not necessarily be based in Westport I know people who moved away from their home towns but had annual prayers/masses said in the original location where people knew them rather than some where else.

Hi Heywood, Myluck,

I really appreciate all the kindness in what you have found for me, last night I spoke with the only relative that's left on the O'Brien side of the family.  she could confirm that Cissie never married and lived with her uncle John Walsh, but she was too young to remember what happened to her. the information you have given confirms this, I have visited the grave of my uncle Dan, now we are hoping that she in interred in this cemetery also and will check the next time we visit.  Sadly we didn't know any of the Walsh side of the family.

Thanks again for all your help.

I have looked for the death notice of Dan's wife Nora online but cant see one. If you have visited  Dan's grave in last few years has Nora's inscription been added ?

You could try St Marys church Westport and give them Cissies date of death they may be able to tell you if she is buried in same grave,or give you information who looks after the Aughvale Cemetery. The photo shows a  large plot so most likely buried together as a family.

Hi Owenwee,

I emailed South Mayo Heritage Centre, the lady was very helpful she confirmed that Cissie was interred in Aughaval cemetery beside John Walsh.

So that was more good news.

Thanks again
