I researched my Grant ancestors many years ago but I only recently found out that my grandmother's grandfather had a sister from a previous marriage. She was Ellen Mary Grant born 1836 in Winfrith Newburgh in Dorset. Her parents were Thomas and Ann Grant.
Her mother died in 1838 and she was bought up by her grandparents in East Stoke near Wareham in Dorset. She moved up to London in the 1850s and on the 1861 census is living with her aunt and uncle Caroline and Alex Alexander who ran a bakers shop in Islington (her father died in 1855). She later married George Dommett who worked as an assistant in the butchers shop next door. They had two children Emmanuel and Edith and in 1873 they emigrated to New Zealand.
My grandmother, who was very knowledgeable about her Grant ancestors and helped me enormously when I started my family history research, knew nothing of this branch of the family, at least she never mentioned them. I assume she didn't realise she had relatives in New Zealand. Sadly she is no longer alive but I would be interested to know what happened to George and Ellen Dommett after they moved to New Zealand if anyone knows anything and if any descendants are still living. I believe Ellen's cousin Caroline Alexander also emigrated with them at the same time.

Added - because he died during WW1, the affidavits have information about his birth, and the birth of the son applying for the grant of probate.

The executor of the will of George DOMMETT, his son Emmanuel Thomas George DOMMETT died intestate in 1919. His probate contains details of his children.

There is a further grant of probate for the same man in 1958 - part of the estate had not been distributed. This has updated details of his children.

Hello deejayEn
You will by now have read through the Probate records provided here by Johnf04 and noticed that Emmanuel Thomas George DOMMETT left a very large family ... 13 children. ;)
And so it is that a good number of researchers of the Emmanuel DOMMETT family, have placed information and family trees online - there are many at the ancestry.com website.
If you have access to ancestry, then it's worth seeking out some of these trees - because the "work" has already been done, and additional info, (not available as records online, because of "cut off" dates to protect privacy), has been provided.

Hi
Have some info to follow for Caroline ALEXANDER (Ellen's cousin).
Firstly, her 1879 marriage to Thomas ROWLES.

Thanks to all of you. This has already given me a lot of information including those wills and that v useful newspaper site and next time I sign in to Ancestry I will try and explore further. I'm hoping to find someone with some photographs.
What's odd is that I know George Dommett was a butcher when he worked in London but on the emigration listing he is down as a Shepherd and on his funeral notice and will he is described as a carrier.
-
Caroline ROWLES (nee ALEXANDER) ... continued :
From NZ BDM (online) - BIRTHS
ROWLES - Parents shown as Caroline and Thomas
1879 - Annie
1881 - Kate
1883 - Maggie
1883 - Roderick
1885 - John
1889 - Nellie
1897 - Caroline
[Note: Have a feeling there were children between Nellie (1889) and Caroline (1897) as one not named above is mentioned in the will of her mother. The 1883 births possibly twins ? ]

Hi deejayEn
Have to say "not so terribly odd as you might imagine". ;D
[My own ggg-gf was a tailor in London, arrived in NZ as a "Labourer" and departed this world as a brewer ! ]
If a man was taking advantage of an immigration scheme whereby the fare for his family's journey to a new land (such as NZ) was largely paid for, then he might be forced to take on another occupation to meet the criteria of the government or province who was subsidising his travel costs.
There are many examples of this happening ... and as the years passed and people prospered, they also changed occupations and started up businesses etc. etc.
~ Lu
-
I suppose there is a connection between butchery and being a shepherd and his father was a fellmonger (a dealer in animal skins.). And maybe he thought work in NZ would be easier to find if he said he was a shepherd, but I previously I found a listing on a family history site about the Dommetts which mentions a butchers shop in Marton, so I assumed that he carried on the same trade.
-
Hi deejayEn
A little earlier when looking for info on Caroline ALEXANDER / ROWLES, I spotted the following file at Archives NZ which seemed rather interesting. [ I'll be visiting Archives in the next week or so, and can have a look at the letter if you'd like. Let me know. ]
From: Mrs Caroline ROWLES, late Caroline ALEXANDER, Feilding - dated: 12 December 1879.
Subject : As to best means of obtaining money invested on her account in England ...

I think the butchers shop in Marton was Emmanuel's. Advertisements mention "E. Dommett".

DeejayEn
... I really only gave the "change in occupations" as an example of the sort of thing that occurred with immigrants.

Hi deejayEn
Looking at voting lists / electoral rolls for George DOMMETT following his arrival (1873) in NZ.
He is only ever listed as a "settler" (which is hardly an occupation). ;D
Probably he was somewhat "well-off" too ??
From 1875-76 he is listed as having freehold property at Marton (a small town)... Sections 11,12,15 and 16 at Cabbaballa (Cabbabala ? several spellings exist) Street, Marton.
And ... from the year 1900 , Emmanuel T.G. DOMMETT is listed at Marton with a Residential qualification (not owning property) .... and his occupation is Butcher.

Hello.
In the era you are researching.
With the exception of large cities, where there could have been large slaughter houses and meat wholesalers, butchers needed a reliable source of live animals to keep their retail outlets open. So most would have had a strong connection to the land, by either renting or owning grazing land. Many also did their own slaughtering.
In the rural areas livestock sales would only be weekly or less frequently. Quite often a butchery business was an associate business of a farming operation. It was not until after WWII and the advent of supermarkets, did we see marked changes in the distribution chain of meat retailing.

Thanks once again to all who helped. I now have a lot to go on.
Lucy2 - I would be interested to see that letter from Carline Alexander, if you get a chance to look at it. Also it is interesting what you say about George Dommett owning land in NZ. In England his father owned a public house/inn in Axminster, Devon and I believe he died in 1862 so it's possible that George was left some money in his will.

Thanks once again to all who have helped with the research and links, especially Minniehaha who has given me loads to go on. My apologies for not replying sooner but I have been away.
What amazes me is the similar Christian names between some of these families and my grandmother's family in London which leads me to suspect that they were in contact with each other.
Lucy2 - I did receive the Caroline Alexander letter thank you.
-
I'm a bit behind the eight-ball here, but if you're still following this thread I may be able to help.
George and Ellen Dommett are my great-grandparents amd I'm delighted to link with Ellen's relatives in UK. I'll read through this thread carefully to add to my own family records. :-) :-)
Ellen married James Alexander Duley in 1886 and they had nine children, including my beloved Grandpa, Norman Duley.
Happy to provide more info if it's wanted. I have photos of Ellen and James Duley, or "Gran" and "Peta" as they were known to their grandchildren.

Welcome to RootsChat, and it's NZ discussion boards.
I see dejayEn logged on to the forum following your placing this post, so am assuming they got an email notification. As we are not allowed to publically discuss the living, they possibly have sent you a Personal Message. However to be able to recieve it you will have to have posted several posts on the RootsChat forum. Just a few Hello's with some smilies will do. Then you will get a notification by the MY MESSAGES in the top of page bold banner.
As this post is now hosted on the NZ completed board it does not get as many visitors, though those, like me who contributed to the post, will probably have recieved a notification that the sleeping post has awakened.
If you don't get any further acknowledgements, I would suggest you start a thread on the active NZ Board.
I went to Puketaha Scouts with a GRANT many moons ago.
All the best.
