Title: looking for crew list
Post by: frenchcoco on Monday 15 May 17 14:01 BST (UK)
Hello,
my name is Corinne and I'm looking for one of my ancestor (like everyone here I suppose  :-\).
I know he was steward on a vessel : barque Longfellow, during a journey from Bordeaux (France) to cardiff on november, 1887. Does someone knows how to obtain the crew agreement of this vessel during this journey ?
As you can read, I'm French and this is my first research out of France.
I'm really sorry if I "knock at the wrong door" as we say in France.
Thank you for your answers.
Corinne

Corinne,
The National Archives,Kew (London) holds crewlist & agreements for a ship Longfellow (of St.John,NB) Official Number 66990 a barque of 812 tons for -
1886 BT99/1492 and
1887 BT99/1527.
This could be your ship and you might find some local who visits TNA who may be good enough to look it up for you. Failing that you may have to contact TNA yourself.
jcmac.

A warm welcome to Rootschat Corinne.

What is the name of your relative?

Heather

Hello Heather,
thank you for your welcome.
My relative's name is Charles Wilfrid Paris. He was steward on the barque Longfellow of St John, New Brunswick ; the vessel found by JCmac is the right one. During the journey from Bordeaux to Cardiff in november 1887 he was charged (and discharged) with a manslaughter on board (seen on South Wales Echo, december, 1887, 22nd and ).
these are the only facts I know about him. Nothing about his birth, death. Just one more thing : he has disappeared from France during the year 1889. His family never had news from him.
I hope I will find some facts about him in the crew list of the Longfellow.

There is a marriage for Charles Wilfred Paris (age 25) to Elizabeth Ann Coggan on Familysearch in Cardiff, 10 Dec 1892. His father was Peter Paris.

A possible if he settled in Cardiff and wasn't born in France.
There is a Charles Paris age 25 crew member of the Dodo sailing Cardiff to Cork to Cardiff in 1890 born Muntituis (looking at the image think this should read Mauritius) although looking at where his signature should be it doesn't appear he was on board

Hello,

I thank you all for your answers. Concerning Charles Wilfred Paris, we can suppose that he was French. I was married with Clarisse Beysseresse (place and date unknown). They had two children :
- my great grand father : Charles Wilfred Paris (as his father) born June, 25th 1884 in Valparaiso (chile) while Clarisse and Charles where working on a boat (according to the family records) ;
- a girl born in 1889 in Bordeaux where the family lived when the father disappeared.
The name of Beysseresse is typically french, that's why we supposed they were both French.

It's impossible to check the crew agreements of Bordeaux, they have totally burned in 1919.

I hope that the Longfellow's path of research will be successfull.

Thank you all.

On the 14th August 1918, the ship Empress of Britain arrived in New York from Liverpool.

One of the passengers was Charles Wilfred Paris. The print out isn't very clear so I will have another look at it next time I am in the library. It is available on Ancestry worldwide which I son't have.

The 1891 Welsh Census has a Charles Paris (a S.ship Stoker) aged 35 years from Mauritius boarding with many other sailors (some from France right next to him in the list) in Cardiff at 165 Bute Street.

I can't find the one you're referring to, but New York passenger lists from that time frame are available for free at www.familysearch.org or http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger (registration is free).

Corrine,

Are you aware that the birth of your great-grandfather, Charles Wilfred Paris, was registered at the British consular office in Valparaiso? This suggests to me that he was born on a British ship but I do not know how this affects his nationality - if his parents were both French.

Additionally, I do not know whether you are already familiar with the (free) Welsh Newspapers Online website [which is hosted by the National Library of Wales].

I mention this because, on this site, (as well as a number of reports about the manslaughter on the barque Longfellow in 1887) there is a particular newspaper item from the South Wales Daily News of 15 July 1896 that may be of interest to you.

If you search on this site using [exactly as shown] "charles-wilfrid-paris" you will find an intriguing account (under the heading: "An Extraordinary Incident") of his encounter with an armed man - who may have been a wanted murderer!

Willyam,

thank you for you post. I wasn't aware (till now of course !) that my great-grand father was registred at the British consulate. I knew he was born in Valparaiso and I looked for him at the French consulate ! and, of course, they had nothing about him.
Can I ask you how and where I can find a copy of this registration ? Maybe It will help me to know if the Charles Wilfrid Paris of Cardiff was really his disappeared father and my great-great grand father (not easy when both father and son have the same name !!!!).
One more time, thank you for these informations.

Corrine,

A copy of the birth record can be obtained from the General Register Office (see this link: https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customers_want_to_know.asp#Overseas) and the relevant GRO references for the birth registration [as taken from Findmypast] are: Volume 7 & Page 290.

At this point I would like to propose that you now ask the Moderator of this (Beginners) board if this thread of posts can now be relocated to the Glamorgan board.

I feel that this will be helpful because the Cardiff-related nature of some of the previous responses suggests that the Glamorgan-focused experts will be better placed to clarify matters for you.

In particular it may be that one of them may know whether or not the Cardiff custody records for November/December 1887 have survived - as they may contain key information regarding Charles Wilfred Paris.

I have moved your topic.

With regards to ordering certificates, the overseas records indexes are not online at the GRO, only a range of births and deaths for England & Wales.

go to www.gro.gov.uk

select order certificates online

select register/login from top right of the screen

enter your user name and password or register as a new customer if you don't have a login.

If you are a new customer the GRO will send a verification email before you can proceed

once you are in, select place an order

the next bit is important, you are trying to order an overseas event which are lower down the screen.

select births overseas events

for all events, select the circle to confirm that you have the GRO index reference number  which is the information posted by willyam

the year of the event is 1881, the entry is 1881-1885 but you can only put in 4 numbers

submit that information and go to the next screen where you can enter his name and the reference numbers in the fields marked with *

the system then defaults to sending the certificate by post. You cannot use the DX service and if you select priority you will pay £23.40 instead of £9.25 but the fee includes postage. I don't think there is any need for you to have a priority service.

submit that information and you can then go forward to the payment screens.

Hope this helps.

Hello,
I've just received from GRO the copy of my great-grand father Charles Wilfred Paris' certificate of birth thanks to the information given by Willyam.
Unfortunately, there's no information concerning the residence of his parents Charles Wilfred Paris and Clarisse Beysseresse.
It's only written that the father (Charles wilfred Paris) was cook and steward on board Barque 'Saga' of Picton, N.S.
A new crew list to find !!!
If the occupation of Charles senior (steward) is a reliable indication, the Charles Wilfred Paris quoted in the South Wales Echo was my ancestor.
Can I ask again : Does someone know how I can obtain the crew list of barque Longfellow in 1887or of barque Saga in 1884 ?
I thank you all for your help and clues.

Corinne,

The tips that you have been sent in previous posts regarding your great-great-grandfather having been born in Mauritius all look to be good.

I say this because, following through on Seaweed's invaluable link in respect of the Saga in 1884, I have just come across the most delightful record.

I say delightful because, as you will see from the following link for the Snow Queen in 1881, this record not only has Charles W Paris (age 25 of Mauritius) in the crew list but alongside him is listed Clarissa Paris (age 27 of France).

See: https://www.mun.ca/mha/1881/viewcrew1881.php?Record_ID=212755&CrewListPage=2&page=4

I have separately also found quite a bit more online pertaining to your great-great-grandfather. I am still putting this in order and I will post it over the next couple of days.

Nice find Willyam.
Can you make out the name of Charles Paris's previous ship, also the rank/job title of Clairissa. To find a women listed on a Crew Agreement of a 19th century sailing ship is unusual to say the least.
frenchcoco, only the 1887 Crew Agreements of LONGFELLOW is available from Kew. The 1884 C/A's of SAGA are at MHA in Newfoundland.

Corrine,

Here is a summary of what is known about your great-great-grandfather Charles Wilfred Paris.

1855 He was born in Port Louis in Mauritius. If you are thinking of trying to establish his exact date of birth the following link may be helpful to you - unless other Rootschatters can advise otherwise.
http://news.rootsweb.com/th/read/AFR-MAURITIUS/2004-07/1091214998

1875 He is listed as a member of the crew of the ship “Mary Ann” which arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia from Mauritius on 14 March. His age is given as 19 and his crew status is that of Boy. (source: image in Ancestry)

1878 He is listed as a member of the crew of the barque “Cyprus”, which departed St John, New Brunswick, Canada on 22 September & arrived in London, England on 1 July 1879. His age is given as 25 and his crew status is that of Able-bodied Seaman. (source: transcription in Ancestry; original document with the Maritime History Archive [MHA] in Newfoundland)

1879 In December of this year he enlisted in the US Navy (source: image in FamilySearch - see this link: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-8S2G-3?mode=g&i=294&cc=1825347)

1880 On 19 February Charles Wilford Paris was admitted to a US Naval Hospital with a diagnosis of Synovitis (source: image in Ancestry)

1881 He is listed, in the company of his wife, as a member of the crew of the “Snow Queen” (see this link: https://www.mun.ca/mha/1881/viewcrew1881.php?Record_ID=212755&CrewListPage=2&page=4)

1884 Your great-grandfather is born on the barque “Saga”. Incidentally this vessel was registered at Pictou, Nova Scotia (rather than Picton).

1887 As the result of an incident on the barque “Longfellow”, he is charged with, and cleared of, manslaughter.

1891 In the census for this year he is a Boarder at 165 Bute Street, Cardiff. His age is given as 35 and his occupation is recorded as that of Steamship Stoker.

1892 On 10 December he married Elizabeth Ann Coggan in Cardiff. His signature on the marriage record is compatible with his signature on the “Snow Queen” crew agreement. (source: image in Findmypast)

1896 In July he had a reported confrontation with a gunman - who may have been a wanted murderer.

1901 There is no trace of him in the census for this year.

1905 & 1906 He is listed as a member of the crew of the SS “Monsaldale”. His crew status is that of Donkeyman and, most notably, his surname is recorded as Parris. (source: transcriptions in Findmypast)

1911 There is no trace of him in the census for this year.

1915 He is listed (under the surname of Parris) as a member of the crew of the the ship “Euterpe” (source: http://1915crewlists.rmg.co.uk/crew-member?crew_member_search%5BlastName%5D=parris&crew_member_search%5BfirstName%5D=&crew_member_search%5BvesselName%5D=&crew_member_search%5Bcapacity%5D=&crew_member_search%5BbirthPlace%5D=mauritius&crew_member_search%5Bsubmit%5D=)

1918 He is awarded a Merchant Navy war service medal (see this link: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8078020) - again under the surname of Parris.

1918 On 14 August he is listed as a passenger arriving in New York on the “Empress of Britain”. The image of the passenger list shows that he was “in transit”, in the company of other seamen en route to Montreal to crew an unnamed steamer. His next-of-kin is named as his wife, Mrs E Parris of 26 Oakley Street, Cardiff. As his ticket was paid for by the “Ministry of Shipping” this suggests that the unnamed steamer was a British ship and that he will be on another crew list somewhere.

This latter journey from Montreal may have been amongst the last of his many voyages because……..

1923 There is a death registered in Cardiff (in the January/February/March quarter) for a Charles Parris,- aged 67. The GRO references are: volume 11A & page 494.

I still have a little more information relating to your great-great-grandfather and I plan to post this separately & soon.

Title: Re: looking for crew list
Post by: willyam on Monday 05 June 17 22:44 BST (UK)
Corinne,

As previously mentioned, your great-great-grandfather married Elizabeth Ann Coggan in Cardiff on 10 December 1892.

Knowing this, I subsequently searched the records for any children born of this marriage along with the presence of Elizabeth Ann Paris in the 1901 & 1911 censuses.

However, whilst I did not find any children or relevant census entries, what I did find was a death registered in Cardiff for an Elizabeth Paris, aged 22, in the January/February/March quarter of 1896.

Therefore, being aware of this, I was somewhat surprised to find that the next-of-kin in the “Empress of Britain” 1918 passenger list was a Mrs E Parris - living at 26 Oakley Street in Cardiff.

So I searched the 1911 census again to see if I could find such a person in Cardiff and what I found was an Elizabeth Parris - who was then living at 47 Oakley Street!

She was recorded as a married woman, having been married for 14 years and there being 4 children (all then still alive) borne of the marriage. Living with her were her 4 daughters (all born in Cardiff).

In the 1901 census she is living elsewhere in Cardiff, with just 2 daughters.

Although Elizabeth claimed a marriage of 14 years, what I then found was a marriage registered in Cardiff in 1900 between Charles Wilfred Parris & Elizabeth Finley. I also found that there was a fifth daughter born in Cardiff in 1918.

To summarise this family:

Elizabeth Parris (nee Finley) - born 10 November 1876 in Glasgow & died in 1964 in Cardiff
Rosie Jane Paris - born 14 May 1898 & died in 1915 in Cardiff
Jessie May Paris - born 29 January 1900 & died in 1973 in Cardiff (married surname: Dimond)
Violet Elizabeth Parris  - born 5 March 1903 & died in 1972 in Cardiff (married surname: Smith)
Mary Emily Parris - born in 1907 (further information as yet not found)
Margaret Isobel Parris - born 29 March 1918 & died in Cardiff in 1997 (married surname: Howe)

Incredible ! My great-great grandfather was a bigamist ! He had never divorced Clarissa Beysseresse (as far as I know). Thank you Willyam for all this work. I'm really grateful for all your help.
I can fill a blank space in his life :
may 1889 : he was in Bordeaux with his "french family", he registered the birth of his daughter Marie Gabrielle (see his signature on the attachment, do you think it's the same ?).
1904 : his son (my great-grandfather) married. To proove that the father is absent and can't give his agreement, Clarissa had to provide a "acte de notoriété" (something like affidavit, I'm not sure for the translation) established by a judge, which says "from his departure during the year 1889, the so-called Charles Wilfred Paris has given no news to his family and despite the researches of his family, it has been impossible to know what happened to him".
1912 : his daughter married. A new affidavit is provided with the same declaration.

Corrine,

Although I am not a handwriting expert, it looks to me that the three signatures of your great-great-grandfather are all compatible with each other.

Perhaps, over time, more crew lists will become available online - to enable you to fill in the gaps in his seagoing history.

Corrine & Seaweed,

I now believe (by deciphering the captain's handwriting) that the ship that Charles Wilfred Paris was on before he joined the "Snow Queen" was the (British) barque "Kentigern". What do you think?

In a copy of the Lloyd's List of 6 June 1881 (on page 11 & in Findmypast) is a report (under the heading "Speakings") of it being passed by the "Cambrian Prince" at Havre on 20 May - whilst en route from Antwerp to Philadelphia.

thanks for this new discovery. What about Clarissa's ship ? Foreign ? A ship's name or did she come from a foreign ship or from abroad ?
I'm not really accustomed to naval vocabulary  :-\
Concerning her job on board, her son told my mother, (when she was a child), that Clarissa was maid on boats. But here, it doesn't seem to be.

Hello Ray and thanks a lot for these informations. Are you able to decipher the document I sent in attachment ? I mean, I don't understand why my gg-grandfather received this medal and what he was doing during WW1.
Thanks in advance.
Corinne

Hi Corrine, I don't have any information on the medals but here is a link to Wikipedia which may answer some of you questions:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercantile_Marine_War_Medal

But it may be useful to you to post the query on the Armed Forces board (WW1).  I have always had really good results from that board.

Just found this which again may be useful to you:
