Title: Missing Cogges Baptism
Post by: halsteadiron on Friday 19 May 17 18:00 BST (UK)
I am struggling to trace the birth/baptism/parentage of my 3xGt grandfather, James Beal. He was born in Cogges around 1807 (according to the 1841, 1851 & 1861 census) and married Harriett Holborough, also at Cogges, in 1828 and they had 12 children, including my 2xGt Grandfather, William (b 1845). I have checked the Parish Registers and also the Bishop’s Transcripts for Cogges without any luck, however, I have found children of a Thomas & Jane Beal baptised between 1800 and 1812 at Cogges with a seemingly conspicuous gap between 1806 and 1809! Any suggestions on any other sources?

Firstly, welcome to the Oxfordshire board!

This is a difficult one, but I would make the following comments:

Have you checked all census entries for James, his wife and children - on the off-chance that parents/grandparents may appear?

Have you checked for wills for James and his (possible) parents Thomas and Jane?

Would any of Thomas and Jane's children have married after the start of civil registration?  If so, marriage certificates may include siblings as witnesses?

There is a Trevor Beal listed on the Oxfordshire Surnames Interest List (www.oxsil.org.uk) as researching BEALs in Cogges c1800 (hope this isn't you!).

Finally, it may be worth contacting the Oxfordshire Family History Society (www.ofhs.org.uk) and asking them to check their Oxfordshire Baptism Index (1538-1851) to see if there are any other James BEALs baptised c1807 in case he was baptised out of the parish.

Hope this gives you some more leads to follow!

Pennie

Hi Pennie
Thanks very much for your welcome and for your response to my problem
Unfortunately none of the census entries have any parents or grandparents listed
I must admit I have not checked for any wills, although, as ag labs, I probably wrongly assumed there would not be any! Also I have not checked for any of the marriages of the possible brothers & sisters, something I will have to do. There is a Charlotte Beal (one of his possible sisters) who signed with a cross as a witness to James & Harriett’s marriage in 1828
Incidentally, it is me who is listed in the Oxfordshire Surnames Interest List (this missing baptism has bugged me for several years!)
I have been in contact with the Oxfordshire History Centre who have checked their baptism registers and also their baptism index with no luck, the only ‘other’ James Beal that they found around that time was baptised in Banbury

Hi There

Have you tried Oxfordshire FHS search service as this could well be a way of finding the info you require - you can find them by typing OFHS into google then have a read of the web site & you will see search services listed on it

All the very best

ps you could also try OXSIL to see if anyone else in OXF is looking for info on the name or even the public members trees on Ancestry but beware there are a lot of errors on some of them

That's good news you intending to join the OFHS so I welcome you in advance & feel sure you will enjoy your membership - please don't forget when you join to send in some of the names you are researching for publication in the FHS journal members interests & I hope the names you publish are also being researched by another member who may be able to help you

All the very best

Phil

Hi Jolee
Thank you very much for your post, I have rechecked my copy of the 1841 census for James & Harriet at Coggs and there are no notes in the margin and they are living at Newland in the parish of Coggs which is near Witney (which is a considerable distance from Banbury). I think you may have found another James & Harriet Beal! I am aware of the James Beal who was baptised in 1807, son of William & Elizabeth at Banbury, but had assumed it was not the correct James due to the distance from Coggs
However, many thanks for your response and suggestion
