I have been researching the paternal side of my family tree for a very long time and have made it back to my 4th great grandfather born in 1788 in what is now KY but was VA then. I can find where he is born/married/buried, his wife's info, and both of them on a census in 1860.
I cannot find either of his parents, I cannot locate him on a census previous to 1860 (he was 72 at the time). He was born in the states, shortly before the census started but no luck.
I feel like I am at a dead end with both of them. Any ideas? I've used WikiTree, Ancestry, Rootsweb, etc but just can't get past this. They came from somewhere!

Hi LeahRaye
Welcome to RootsChat :)
There are some experienced researchers on here that may be able to help you. If you gave us some names it would be a great help :)

Thomas Lee Robinson was born in 1788 in VA (later became a part of KY). He married Sarah Sally King (maybe 2nd marriage because he has two children born before the marriage date. They had a James Robinson in 1842. All three buried in LOUDON county TN.
I have only been able to find him on the 1860 census so far.
I'm hoping to find Thomas on a census as a child to determine his parents. I am at a dead end to find his parents, unsure if they were immigrants.
I have tons of information saved if any other tidbits would help. I appreciate any help I can get!

Hi Leah Raye,
Welcome to Rootschat ;D
When did Thomas Lee marry Sally?
Could you please list the full details of the 1860 Census that you do have?
Had their son James in 1842? That's when he was born?
Could you also list all Thomas' known children?
This is the couple, buried in Loudon:
Steekee Cemetery, Loudon, Loudon Co., Tennessee
Thomas Lee ROBINSON
Born 11 May 1788, died 22 Jul 1864
Find A Grave Memorial# 28907696
Sally ROBINSON
Born 21 Dec 1788, died 7 May 1865
Find A Grave Memorial# 28907689
Do you know if the dates are a transcript of the actual Headstone?
As I'm sure you know, the earlier federal US Census, don't list all person in the households - just the Head, then then numbers of others, broken down by age, gender and so on.
Cheers

From an online tree here is a 1850 census:

William Roberson 22
Source: Year: 1850; Census Place: Subdivision 20, Roane, Tennessee; Roll: M432_893; Page: 355A; Image: 172
This tree has parents John Robinson Snr (1738 - 1798) and Lucy Smith (1734-1825). I see no support for parentage and with the age calculation show that Lucy Smith would have been 54 years of age when Thomas Lee was born it does seem unlikely.

1820 census
There are only 3 Robinson (or similar) entries for the 1820 census. One is unlikely because there are no children. If there was information on children born it might be possible to identify if one of the other two was Thomas Lee:

On the page relating to the Thomas Lee Robinson family it states that Sarah King's father was a Major Robert King USA Officer. It also states that Thomas had 2 brothers, John W and James Robinson.
It also shows the issue of Thomas & Sarah:

Wow, that's a lot of good info. I am unsure where to go from here as I don't know if any of those are right.
I don't even know how to type this all out, so please have patience. :)
I can prove back to great grandfather with obits and sibling lists.
James R Robinson (6/7/1842 - 11/6/1904) Married Roxina Lillie/Lilly (1844-1907) in Caldwell Co, KY on 4/23/1867. I have obits that state her name was spelled LILLY but her headstone actually says LILLIE.
Their children were:
Luther Riley Robinson (7/5/1874-5/31/1947)
William "Yankee" Melvin Robinson (1882 - 9/9/1942)*My grandfathers father
Millard Fillmore Robinson (1883-1955) *located on 1920 census in Stewart TN, aged 37
The parent of James R (b 1842) was James (b 1824 in that history page) with siblings named Susan (1819-1886) and John Wesley (1828-1906). Somehow I have his birth year as 1817 but the jpeg list does show two matching siblings but James born in 1824, making him 18 when James R was born. Nancy, Minerva, and Mary would account for the gap between Susan and John Wesley on my list.
But that history shows James R Born 1842 only had one child? Robert King? Am I reading it right?
And did those daughters, Nancy, Minerva, and Mary, MARRY other Robinsons???

Here is the 1850 census for James R:
Name: James R Robinson

The transcript for Robert is not correct the original is Robert K.
Leahraye I have not had time to follow this up but there is a tree on A..ty which gives the parents of the James R who married Roxina as James Robinson (1810-1870) and Ann Marie Ragan.
But that history shows James R Born 1842 only had one child? Robert King? Am I reading it right?
Robert King Robinson was the son of James R born 1817 (1824 on the Roane History). As you see on the 1850 census there is no James R (1842)
It looks like the Roane history was not correct on the dob of James R and he was born in 1817. Perhaps Robert King was specifically mentioned because he made good and was a lawyer by 1880?

I think the Robert King Robinson sibling set is the wrong family. There is no mention of a son named JAMES in any of those census reports.
I think the ANN Maria/Marie married 1829 is probably the right lead. Which means Thomas isn't even where I am headed.
So now I research Ann Marie and James again, which is where I got stuck last time.
I had to draw myself a time line to keep this all straight, I was getting the JAMES's confused.
Thank you for all of your help! I will be back with more questions shortly.

Going back to this reply 15 which RayDen posted yesterday - there is no indication on the image that Eliza is a sister - Joseph a brother or Ellen a sister - unless there is another copy I haven't come across ??? This is an extract of the family search free 1860 census of Stewart Tennessee.
Also the name of David is quite faint and difficult to read but it is David ??????? Robinson - there are ditto marks at the end of the christian and middle names ???
Adam Seuelen - is "blank Adams"
David Leuelen Robinson is the transcription in the written type at the bottom. David is aged 97 years - so could he be a father/relative ???

Just to note also that many of those ancestry trees showing the parents as James Russell Robinson and Ann Maria Ragan have James Robinson born 1817 - the birth date cannot be correct if this couple married 27 August 1829 Dickson, Tennessee. The surname on this record is Robertson
The other James Robinson would have been born 1809 according to the 1860 census.

Always lots of volunteers on here that may be able to help you further but its going to be a difficult task locating records for the time frame you require, lots were destroyed in the civil War. There were also fires at the Montgomery County courthouse in 1878 & 1900, and a tornado in 1999. ::)

Sandra
Sandra could I suggest that the online trees are mixing up the James Robinsons. The online trees (the few that I have looked at) have his burial in Loudon County, some 30 miles from Roane county, but which is some 250 miles from Stewart county. The ages on the 1850 & 1860 census (acknowledging the Robertson/Robinson names) would allow and 1829 marriage.

Yes, I am negating the 1817 James Robinson.
Using the James Robinson (Robertson on the marriage register is mistake? Or is the ROBINSON on all of the census' mistake? Did they make a change to the last name somewhere?) born in 1809 I can locate on the 1850 census in Smith County, TN HH 272 line 35
James 40
Ann 43 (born 1805)
Eliza 19 (but shows 24 on 1860 census)
William 18
Caroline 15 (1860 census show James Johnson and Caroline Married in HH of James)
Joseph 10
James 7
Elenora 4 (Ellen on 1860)
The 1860 census shows JAMES 51 as "PoorHouse Keeper"??? Could that account for the Suelen and random folks listed too? I cannot locate this James' death date or any info for them on the 1870 census.
James (b 1842) married Roxina Art (RA LILLIE) in Princeton KY on 04/23/1867.
Birth of Luther Riley in 1874 in Trigg KY.
1880 census, Big Rock, Stewart Co, TN HH 13382316, page 231b
James 35
Roxina Art 26
Liddia 7
Luther 5
Logan 4
Augusta 0
No 1890 census.
1900 Census
"Roberson" HH 169 pg 9A, District 5 Stewart KY.
James 57
Roxina 55
"Melvin" 18 (William Melvin)
"Willard" 17 (Millard Fillmore)
By 1910 James and Roxina had died and were buried in TN (1904) and KY (1907).
1910- William Melvin is in Peggs, Cherokee, OKLAHOMA on the census with wife and children.
William 28
Minnie 26
Hallie 9
Carter 7
Wiley 5
But he is buried back in TN while his wife is buried in OK.
I am going to try for the obits suggested by Sandra (thank you!) for James R and Roxina. It's the going BACK I am having trouble with, feel like I am struggling to keep all of this straight. I stopped updating the ancestry site for now and using the FAMILYSEARCH to keep it all straight for now.
Ray, Thank you for the geographical info on TN, I have started using a map too because of the common names.

Best ignoring all the ancestry trees, obvious from the links that they are copied from one to another.
Intriguing what connection the middle name "Riley" might have ?
Part of the obituary for Dr Luther Riley Robinson. (photo in this article - same as one on Find A Grave)
Dr. Luther Riley Robinson, 73, pastor of the Good Shepherd Universalist Church in Racine from 1924 to 1930, died May 31 at his home in Somerset, Ky. Dr. Robinson was born in Princeton, Ky., July 5, 1874, and was ordained when 19. He served pastorates in Kentucky, Minnesota, Wisconsin and California, was midwest superintendent of the Universalist Church for four years and secretary-superintendent of the Wisconsin Universalist churches for 16 years.............

Millard Fillmore 1883 - 1955 and William Melvin Robinson 1882 - 1942 - were buried in Seay Cemetery, Indian Mound Stewart County - IF that is where James R Robinson passed away perhaps an enquiry with the cemetery would help confirm whether he is also buried there.

The parents could'nt have done a Johnny Cash and named him Luther Liley Robinson could they? and Luther changed it to Riley? But I have just seen an online tree which has Luthers father's name as James Riley Robinson.
This tree has Roxina's parents names as Wyatt Lillie and Martha C Going, supported by an 1850 and 1860 census.

Think this is the grave of James: https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=120374602
Roxina buried in same cemetery as Luther - so living with him when she died?

LeahRaye, think you should just check the 1850 census. You have the right family but they are in Stewart TN, not Smith County TN. There is about 140 miles between Stewart & Smith Counties.

I actually found the original image and it DOES say IN THE COUNTY OF STEWART across the top.
That was driving me a little batty. I know have a county map of TN and lower KY printed out that I am using. I am finding it truly difficult not to get them mixed up with the LOUDON/ROANE county Robinson. Wondering if there were a sibling split at some point?
I am unable to locate ANY death or burial info for James or Ann. I even tried using ROBERTSON (which their marriage license was filed under). It is ROBINSON on the 1860 and 1850 census. But Roberson on the 1900. eesh.
Is there a way to figure out what the dwelling number map was for these census takers? Like they were dwelling 272 in Stewart county that was visited. Is there a way to figure out where that dwelling was/ I realize it might not still actually be a home/building anymore. But was it in the town? In the more rural areas? Is that even possible to determine?

Also, I can locate James and Ann on the 1830 census with their one infant daughter born in 1930 in Dickson County and 1840 with their brood of 4, same county in which they were married. Ann's dad is all over the census records with lots of kids but died in 1848. I am trying to locate James as a 1 year old on the 1810 or 11 year old on the 1820, but without sibling sets or parents ages, this is frustrating.
I narrowed it down to Dickson county to try to start, just because they both seem to have been there already (Ann's father William shows up on the Dickson county census in 1820). This is where the last name gets weird.
They were married as ROBERTSON and on the 1830 and 1840 census as ROBERTSON. In 1850 & 1860 it is ROBINSON...
John and Abraham both have 1 or 2 over age 10 on the 1820 (James born in 1809). That's GUESSING he is living in Dickson in 1820 before he marries Ann in 1829.
And was the name spelled BY the census taker? Or by the person giving the info?
