Can anyone help me trace this man and his parents I believe they moved to Bristol by 1911 where he married in 1914.

If that's correct, there is a tree on Ancestry that has his marriage certificate to Alice Rowe. That says his father was John Meek a railway employee.

Thanks so much for that very valuable information. I just need now to get confirmation now that the family or specifically Samuel mover to Bristol by 1911. Sadly their eldest child Hilda was murdered in 1935 aged 19 and Samuel died 3 years later at the age of 46.

No, the family was still in Taunton for that census but Samuel wasn't with them!

Gloucs sounds about right for the tribe of Meek's, miners, from the Forest of Dean?

According to the 1911 census John was born in 1848/9 in Stapleton Glos. the  Freebmd site shows a John Meek born 1852 son of Richard Meek & Hannah  Harrison who married in 1848. The 1851 Census shows Richard born c1824 in EastnDean. Any ideas where I can look beyond that please.

Good point, so I should be looking for a John Meek born 1852 in Stepleton son of a Samuel Meek. You mentioned a family tree on Ancestry, would this possibly have this information on it ?

They have: (all born Gloucestershire)

John Meek b. 1853 married to Frances Ellen Cleverly b.1855

His father was Samuel Meek 1831 - 1905 married to an Eliza.  Died Devon

His father was Samuel Meek 1796 married to an Ann

That fits, apart from the actual christening entry which just shows John and not John Joseph 13th June 1852 at Holy Trinity Stapleton Glos parents Samuel and Elvira.

That looks very good as confirmation that we have the right family.and that Samuel was indeed born in 1831 and was only 18 when he married, I now just need to confrim his parents Samuel and Ann and their marriage.
