Title: Jacob Adamson born c1807 in Durham
Post by: bridget1 on Tuesday 23 May 17 21:18 BST (UK)
Hi. I am trying to find out more about Jacob's children. He married Dorothy Taylor in 1832 however on the 1841 census he is listed with 7 children, 2 of them; George (bn c1823) and Mary bn (c1826) were born before Jacob's marriage. So, I am assuming that Dorothy or Jacob must have been married before but I can't trace a previous record.
I found a record for a George Taylor bpt in 1823 to a Samuel and Dorothy Taylor but can't trace a marriage record for them.
Is anyone tracing the same family or has any ideas????
Many thanks
Bridget

Do all the children have the same surname in 1841?

No relationships are given in 1841.  They could be cousins or otherwise related or not related at all even if they do have the same surname so 1841 can be tricky.

Did Jacob have a Brother John?

If I have the right George 1851/1861 etc he is born c 1823-1826 Wolsingham, Durham.

(as a side line Trees have his Wifes mn and  I thinkthe wrong Marriage for him)
GRO Index has Mary Isabella Adamson's Mothers mn as HOGGETT
Marriage Reg Dec 1858 Auckland, George ADAMSON and Mary HOGGARTH on same page

GEORGE Adamson;
birth: 28 January 1822***
christening: 15 June 1833**, Wolsingham, Durham
Parents JOHN/HANNAH

Jacob/Dorothys Marriage gives no indication either were Widowed.

As Milliepede said George/Mary could be any relation to Jacob, Cousin etc.

Trish :)

Just as a sideline Jacob says he is born c 1810 but it appears he was Baptised 1808;

You likely have his Baptism Bridget but did you know his Mother was from Northumberland?

From Familysearch.Org;

Thank you all again for your help with my family tracing.

I already had some of this information but my knowledge has now been widened and I have now added 3 of Jacob's siblings to my tree and some occupations and death record. I had recorded Jacob's birth in 1807 which made me ask the question about George and Mary Adamson as shown on the 1841 census. They would make Jacob 15 when George was born. I also have most of his Aunts and uncles and was looking for a possible cousin George but haven't found this yet. However, I did find a birth for his sister Jane that may have been an illegitimate birth?

I cannot find an 1851 census record for either Jacob or George - have you found them on this year's census?

The 1851 census identified by Radcliff has Jacob as a blacksmith living in Heworth. His age is given as 40 (born about 1811 in Heworth).

Children are Margaret 18. Elizabeth 17, Ellen 16 and John 11. (all born Heworth). Daniel 20 is a lodger.

The only birth of a John Adamson showing on the groindex with mother's name Taylor is John Shotton Adamson Oct - Dec 1838 Lanchester RD.

1861 he is still in Heworth age 50 with wife Hannah (age given as 65 b Newcastle) and son John as well as a daughter (possibly a step daughter) Hannah Moore 34 (b Heworth).

The marriage in  Newcastle in 1852 to Hannah Hunter would give you his father's name.

There is a burial in Heworth of Jacob Adamson 9 Feb 1865 (estimated birth year 1810).

Re his marriage to Dorothy Taylor 13th May 1832 Jarrow the witnesses (as shown on the Bt.were James Hardropper and Mary Adamson.

Wiliam

Added There is a baptism for a Daniel Taylor parents Daniel and Dorothy in Heworth 17 May 1829.
