I posted here before, but maybe someone could help me out?
I'm going to Glasgow on Sunday and want to find my 4x GGF's (George Murdison, died January 17, 1859 in Glasgow) headstone (which may or may not even be standing). I know I need to locate his headstone by going to the Glasgow City Archives. I know he is buried in Southern Necropolis. I don't think I will have time to go to the archives myself as I only have a few short days there, so I thought maybe someone could help me out?
I have emailed Southern Necropolis with no response and have also emailed the archives, but they told me it would be an 8-10 week wait.
Is anyone willing to help me? Thank you in advance.

mj, try this site for a headstone, http://www.memento-mori.co.uk
Skoosh.

EDIT: In this post I may have got confused between the Necropolis and the Southern Necropolis. The next post may give more accurate information.

Original post:
The Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS have transcribed and photographed the memorials in the Southern Necropolis. More on the project at http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/glasgownecropolisproject.aspx and details of the DVD at http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/content/publications.aspx - item no. G0047
From the description, this appears to be a transcription of just the memorials, so if the memorial has gone, or never existed, your ancestor wouldn't be included. Some societies offer look-up services to members (and sometimes non-members for a fee), so it might be worth exploring the site to see if there's anything that would help.

I think the referenced GWSFHS site is for the GLASGOW NECROPOLIS, and not the SOUTHERN NECROPOLIS. Correct me if I'm wrong.
As mjanich probalby knows, the best source of the informatiion he seeks is via http://www.southernnecropolis.co.uk/ -- but it seems to be supported by a single volunteer enthusiast, and there's probably insufficient time.
The Glasgow Archives is at :
Nerys Tunnicliffe| Archivist | Glasgow Life
Glasgow City Archives | Mitchell Library |
North Street | Glasgow | G3 7DN
Tel: 0141 287 2910 | Fax: 0141 226 8452
E: archives@glasgowlife.org.uk
.... this is the official route, and WILL deliver the result, but there is a long backlog. You need to expect a 8-10 week response (and a search fee).

You may be right - I'll add a warning to my earlier post. Apologies if I turn out to have misled anyone.

Yeah, I've emailed the person for Southern Necropolis a couple weeks ago with no response. I've also contacted the archives, but like you said, they told me 8-10 weeks. I suppose that I will have to go myself to the archives. I have very limited time in Glasgow, so I was hoping to avoid it, but oh well! Thanks for you help :)

Actually, they have finished the project of digitising the Southern Necropolis records too (I had emailed the archives), but they aren't online yet unfortunately.

I recently tracked down a relative of mine laid to rest in the Southern Necropolis ..and Sighthill Cemetery in Springburn.. I used the Mitchell library where an Archivist assisted to get all my info required.. This took a few months with a backlog but there was success with good information passed on.. Given my location in NZ I was grateful for this assistance ... I contacted a gentleman at the Linn Cemetery / Crem and this gentleman with the details I had passed to him met me at the Southern Necropolis .. He had been there prior with the details I had offered to do his homework.. He took me to the spot and this was 100% correct.. This gentleman then drove to Sighthill Cemetery with me and applied the same service taking me to the spot and proving 100% .. What amazing service .. I would never have been able to do all that on my own with the time I had available .. All be it I didnt need to do what I done.. I gave him a few pounds to buy a few pints on me .. I was very grateful for this service... I am interested in when the digitised info comes on line as I have a lot more family history in this very Large Cemetery ...
All the best

Hi Scott, How are You?
Just registered with Roots Chat and great to see lots of enquiries etc relating to the Southern Necropolis, and that you have some ancestral links to the cemetery. Really pleased that you got a good result from your visit from the gentleman from the Linn...was it Robert by any chance?
I am a member of the Friends of Southern Necropolis and have had a passion for the cemetery for nearly 30 years, was also married in the cemetery 2 years ago. If there is any way that I can help you in the future, then feel free to get in touch with me. Colin. Oh and I have relations over in New Zealand at Christchurch :)

Hello.....
I am retired, living in Kentucky, U.S., and have become the finder of family information, it appears. My g.g.grandparents were buried in Glasgow Southern Necropolis, Western Section, according to another family member I had contacted in Scotland. They were buried in a lair with another/others, and I have no idea of the number. Now that younger family members are traveling to Scotland these days, I would like to find the lair # for them. Also wondering just what info might be on these registers in terms of place of birth, for instance. The folks I am looking for are James McArthur, d. 1 Jun 1866, and his wife, Annabella (McGilvray) McArthur (listed as Annie B. McArthur, I'm told), d. 3 May, 1878. I have lost contact with the family member there, and can't find him now to pursue this. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
-
Hi Lochlann
I have had a look through the burial records and have located the notes for your ancestors grave etc. Will get back to you asap with the details :) Colin. (Friends of Southern Necropolis).
-
Thank you so much for your prompt reply, Colin.....this is long awaited.
-
Colmac64, are you willing to look for another lair there?
I have an inscription from a stone in the Southern Necropolis to William McConnell (1815-1905) and his wife Isabella Aitkenhead (1821-1902) and sundry other members of their family.
However I don't have a note of where I found their sons Hugh and Robert, who, if they are not a figment of my imagination, must have died in infancy or early childhood between 1850 and 1854. Is it possible that they were buried in the Southern Necropolis too?
-
There are burial registers for the Southern Necropolis online (FamilySearch)
William McConnell, 9 September 1905
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSRF-VSKH-G?i=734&cat=1322281
Isabella, 9 December 1902
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSRF-VSK7-L?i=693&cat=1322281
They seem to be in 101, £9 "Lairs on the Wall". Central Division?
Anyway, they have records of lair owners with dates of interment
So 101, Wall, is here
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS5Q-V37F-3?i=856&cat=1322281
It has another occupant buried 24 October 1906. Should be on the same film as the two McConnells above.

Thank you, jonw65. I have that information, and the 1906 burial is their son John.
What I want to know is where (or indeed whether!) I saw burials of their infant/child sons Hugh and Robert in the early 1850s.
I would also be interested in the death/burial of John's wife Margaret Agnes (Madge) Montgomerie, which I have as yet been unable to find.
I will look again at the information on FS.

Anyone able to confirm if the Family Search records include the SN Western section lairs?
-
Hi
This is what I found on there, not sure if there is any more

Not sure if anyone is still reading this thread. Here's hoping. We've just started doing our family tree and starting to piece a lot together from old photos and certificates in my dads house. My dad is descended from William McConnell - his daughter Agnes Struthers McConnell married John Jones (Agnes is my dad's gran). Amazingly we somehow have the original title deeds for the Southern Necropolis for William McConnell - lairs 101 and 299. Plan is to visit in the next week or so and see if we can find them.
I'd be interested in any info anyone else has on William McConnell as we start to research. I also have a few certificates related to the Jones family which Agnes married into - John Jones - becoming a freeman citizen of Glasgow and Robert Jones and his membership of the Glasgow Eastern Merchants and tradesmen Society.
-
WeeLee, you and I are related. William McConnell's wife Isabella Aitkenhead was the younger sister of my great-great-grandmother Margaret Aitkenhead.
Agnes Struthers McConnell was (I think) the ninth of their eleven children. After the death of her husband John Jones in 1895 she married James Main in 1906.
Once you have made a couple more posts to this forum we will be able to make contact by Personal Message and exchange notes in detail.
-
Fantastic! I didn’t think I’d get a response. I’d definitely be keen to swap info. Granny Agnes Jones (Main) did indeed marry James Main. From what we know he was a foreman on the forth rail bridge, we have an original signed copy of the document that all the foremen on the bridge presented to Sir William Arroll -it’s hanging up in mum and dads living room. 😁
-
That's quite an heirloom to have :)
I have a note as follows: Erected by William McConnell in memory of his children Thomas, died 30 October 1843 aged 1½ years; James, died 13 February 1849 aged 4½ years; Elizabeth Aitkenhead, died 21 September 1863 aged 4 years; and his father Thomas McConnell, died 7 May 1853 aged 85 years; also his mother Agnes Struthers, died 16 October 1870 aged 96 years; and his wife Isabella Aitkenhead, died 6 December 1902 aged 82 years; the above William McConnell, died 7 September 1905 aged 90 years; also his son John McConnell, beloved husband of Madge Montgomerie, who died 21st October 1906 aged 44 years. [MI, Southern Necropolis, Glasgow: central section, north wall, sixth stone west of main gate]
So that should help to find at least one of the burials. I have not seen the stone myself, so if you find it and get a photograph I'd like to see it.
-
Thank you so much for the additional info. So helpful! I’ll seen you a photo if we find it!

Coming back to this after a very long time and after not doing much at all. :-( But we are back on to finally sort out a bit more info about the family tree after now roping in my dad. :-) Not sure if anyone will still read this thread.
Anyway, we finally dug out the lair certificates which have been passed down through the family and dad took himself off to the Southern Necropolis yesterday. Delighted to say that the McConnell headstone was easily located and its looking fab! Dad was chuffed to see it and I am making my way to it on Saturday for a look.
We also have a lair at 36/9 299 at the S Necropolis. We will try and find that at the weekend and see if any more McConnells in there (but, from a search, and a hunch, we think it may be Agnes Buchanan Dickie Jones - Agnes Struthers McConnells daughter in law hiding in there).
Photos attached of the headstone!

I can't thank you enough for this info. This has just solved a big family puzzle!
My dad always new he had two sisters, Mary and Sheena, born before him and died young but he never was told much about them.
He's going to be chuffed to bits to know they are there along with his gran and grandad. Thank you!
-
Hi
Glad it was useful, good luck for your visit to the lair.
John
-
and thank you again. Took a couple of days but we eventually found them hidden under some ivy in the Souther Necropolis :-)
-
Hi
So glad that you found them.
Hope it is a nice spot, the photo is wonderful.
It looks as though you had to chop back that ivy a bit!

The Kelvingrove address will more than likely be for the Sick Childrens Hospital Yorkhill in the Kelvingrove district of Glasgow which opened in 1914 closed in 2015.
