I have failed to discover where the old Mills (not weaving but corn/flour) were in the Hawick/Wilton area in the 1800-1820s period. I have a relative, Robert Scott who is described as a Millar (sic) on his daughter's wedding certificate in 1803.
Can anyone suggest where I could look please?
Any help gratefully received!

Hi Yvonne,
Have you looked at this site https://hawickcornets.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/1841
It gives some info and maps which you may find useful.

Thank you Dorrie - this looks interesting, particularly the old map.
There is a web site for old maps so I just need to examine one from 1800 closely and plot all the old corn mills and their possible addresses. It's such a pity there were no censuses around that date and Robert can't be found on the 1841 -probably died by then.
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

don't know if this is relative, but i remember reading something about a Scott family being Millers in Hawick at the corn mill which used to be locate near the Hertiage Hub.
I was looking in it because my family had lived there in the past - my great grandfather wrote about playing as a lad there when the Scott's were there, sure the document mentioned that the Miller's widow and family were working it. my great grandfather was born 1847

Thank you terianne for your reply.
Unfortunately, my Robert Scott and his wife would have been pretty old by the time your great grandfather would have been playing at the mill. They were both born around 1770s so would have been a ripe old age by then.
I am finding this brick wall so hard!

Have you heard of the ebook study about Hawick - it is called Hawick word book by Douglas Scott
It's regularly updated and looks at people connected to Hawick and surrounding area with links - there is a whole section on Scott families right back in time
It might be worth a look its very interesting and readily available online - good for brick wall

Hi terianne!
Yes I downloaded it a couple of years ago and failed to find my particular Scotts! However I didn't know it was regularly updated so will download again! Thank you!
