Title: Bathwick marriage lookup please 1805 Maria GIBBS or GILES?
Post by: familydar on Monday 05 June 17 15:51 BST (UK)
Martin McDONALD married Maria Ann GI??S 27 Jun 1805 at Bathwick.

The Ancestry image has GILES.  It is supposed to be of the PR but the consistency of the handwriting makes me think it might be the BT.

The Pallots entry has GIBBS.

The FindMyPast transcript has GIBBS but I've checked with Somerset & Dorset FHS (they supplied the data) and they are not sure of its source, whether BT or PR.

So I'm asking if someone visiting the record office at Taunton could check both the PR and BT (and banns if held) and make a visual comparison for me please.  Does the bride's surname differ between the sources?  Is her signature legible on the PR?  Does she sign GIBBS or GILES?

Thanks in anticipation

Jane :-)

The Ancestry image is of the original register and the signature is clearly Maria Ann Giles. Both signatures are distinct from the text of the register written by the clergyman. The BTs would not have original signatures and would not be in the printed page format. Gibbs must be a mistranscription
