I initially thought Sturdy - and I did find the following on the ancestry message board - would need checking out. Not sure if the link will work so have copied it underneath.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/topics.census.uk.1861/1810.1.1/mb.ashx
"On John Winstanley's marriage certificate it states his father is Thomas Winstanley, mother, Margaret nee Sturdy. Father's occupation Watchmaker.
I have located in I.G.I. a marriage of a Thomas Winstanley and Margaret Sturdy at St. Nicholas Church, Liverpool in 1834
On Johns marr. cert. in 1864 it gave his age as 26. I have been trying to find out if there is any connection between these parties. "

Well done Shanghaipanda - I thought Sturdy first then changed my mind when looking at other 'C's but your finds are convincing.

I agree with Wiggy it is Psithis Pulmonalis.

Thank you so much Wiggy, shanghaipanda and a-1. Does showing you the whole document solidify your opinions of the name Sturdy? Nina

I'm still not sure. If you look at the word shipyard lower down the s is written differently.

Hi Kiwi
I replied to your post about John Winstanley watchmaker earlier. I think it does say Sturdy on Margaret's certificate, if you look at the S in street and the S in m s they match with the S in sturdy.
It's possible that she is the daughter of Thomas Winstanley and Margaret Sturdy and the name John has been a mistake also her age is slightly wrong if you check the GRO Thomas Winstanley and Margaret Sturdy have a daughter called Margaret in 1850, J 1/4, West Derby, Vol 20, pg.1221.
I think the lady on the ancestry board has made a mistake Thomas and Margaret Sturdy's son John married in 1869, his age was given as 21 and his mother's name isn't mentioned on the certificate, John died in 1876 aged 29 of Pulmonary Pthisis. The lady on the ancestry board says that Thomas Winstanley and Margaret Sturdy had a son called John in 1838 but they didn't, they had a son called Thomas Alexander in Liverpool in 1838. A couple named Thomas and Margaret Winstanley from Prescot had a son called John in 1838. :)

In your post about Margaret Winstanley's marriage cert I said I would try and post a copy of the signature of Edward McGuckin/Guffin, who was a Witness to a couple of other Winstanley marriages to see if it was similar to the Edward on Margaret's cert but for some reason I can't attach anything in that thread so I'll try it here.

The first attachment is from Amelia Griffin nee Winstanley's 2nd marriage certificate, I mentioned in the other post that the signature of Thomas, Amelia's brother, looks a bit like it could be James. The second Edward signature is on John's marriage cert
