Title: Confusion and mysteries with the Morris family
Post by: a-l on Sunday 18 June 17 13:22 BST (UK)
This is what I know told by two of the siblings and census.
James Douglas 1876-9
Charlotte 1879
Hannah  named after grandmother
Mary Ann1881
James 1888
Rose 1890  Rose hannah on census
Fred 1892
Edwin 1894 went to Aus
Clara 1896 went to Aus
Diana 1898 I have her info
Nellie Jane 1902 ka Jane went to America
Molly ran away with a black man , never heard from again.
Stanley left the house one day and never heard from again.
Arthur.
Rosemary  had an epileptic fit and died on the fire.
Now the confusion. Were they using middle names ? I can't find any records for the last four.
I presume Hannah is Rosehannah,
Could Molly be Mary Ann even though they are supposed to be two different people ?
The names of the last four continue down the family.
The mysteries of Molly and Stanley I would love to solve and hope someone has them in their family.
The parents were James Douglas and Louisa Morris.
If any kind soul can please help with any information about these siblings I will be so grateful.
Sue

Have you an area where they were born or lived for us to work on?

I'm so sorry I should have said that they lived in Great Holme Street.
Also I do have marriages for Edwin and Clara, thankyou.
One more piece of information about Edwin. He returned to Leicester after being wiped out by a storm in Aus. Set up as a window cleaner and was killed falli g from the ladder, very sad. I don't know when that was though.

Where was Great Holme Street?
You mention in the title The Morris Family but the father is James Douglas, is Douglas the family surname?

Do you have Molly, Stanley, Arthur and Rosemary on a census?

If not do you have rough idea of their birth year?

I have nothing at all on them JJ only the family stories. Seeing as Hannah was Rosehannah and Jane was Nellie Jane made me think they could be middle names  ??? They come down the family as Rosemary , Molly ,Stanley and Arthur which is confusing  :-\
Rosemary supposedly died about 14 years old is all I have.

There appeared to be 15 children in total, but by 1911 eight of them had died, so that should narrow it down a bit.

Really Ellenmai ? I knew of 13 maybe the younger siblings didn't know about them.
They do seem to have tragedies in this family , poor souls.

Thankyou Ellenmai I was curious about that because I was told  at one time that after James Dougas died there were two other sons , James and the other Douglas . That wasn't verified.
Oh dear another one , poor little Walter  :(

That can't be right a-l as James Douglas is a widower in 1911. I have found a possible death for Louisa Jane Morris 1906 Leicester age 47 she was probably worn out and heartbroken with all those deaths  :-\

Sue,

Perhaps it would be best to now collate all the names you are completely sure of and hopefully it will match the number 15  :)

I know of a case where two sisters were brought up in a family with another girl who wasn't actually their sister but always referred to her as their sibling. Just wonder if this could be a similar case with the Morris family.

You mentioned a Nellie Jane born 1902, the only Nelly Jane Morris born in 1902, Leicester had a mother's maiden name of Wilson  ???

Unfortunately all our posts does not answer your original question, if you have a look at the GRO website for births you should be able to find all the Morris/ Brooks.

Just a small update , I think Rosemary must have died pre 1911 so that means that a photo that I have is Nellie Jane just as I had thought it was . ;D
Thankyou both again you have identified a photo without knowing it ! Miraculous sleuthing !!  ;D ;D

Thanks for the update, it's always good to put a name to a previously unknown photograph  ;D

;D It was thought to be Rosemary but I never believed that because she looks younger than the two youngest known sisters on the photo. So knowing that Rosemary died before my Grandma was the age she is on the photo it has to be Nellie Jane !  ;D
Many thanks to you and JJ.
