Title: James Marcus THOMSON died 10 April1942 Timaru
Post by: Tgapitbull on Thursday 22 June 17 06:07 BST (UK)
Can anybody help with a death notice for James Marcus THOMSON who died on 10 April 1942, Timaru.  He is buried in Timaru cemetery.  I have seen an account of his death on Paperspast - he died while working on a ship in Timaru harbour.  He was Chief of the Timaru Scottish Society and apparently had relatives in Invercargill.

Thanks
WNW

Hi Minniehaha,

Thanks for your postings.  I had seen some of the information.  The Probate doc confirms the children's names.  There is another child who was not mentioned in the will so likely that James was not the father.

I will check the electoral roll for Invercargill to see if I can identify any likely relatives of James.

Thanks
WNW

Thanks Minniehaha.

Doris died in 2004.  It would be interesting to find out who her father might have been.  More research reqd here.  I will check Paperspast to see if there was a maintenance case reported in the newspaper.

James Marcus Thomson 's parents were Adam Merry (Merrie) Thomson and Mary WITHELL who married in 1879 in Victoria, Australia.  They had the following children:

Adam Egbert Thomson b 1883 died 1884, Victoria, Aus
Jas Marcus Thomson b 1890 died 1942 Timaru, NZ
Matthew John Withell Thomson b 1888 died 1958 (married Alice Mary ? (not able to check marriage details on the VIC BDM website as it is currently undergoing maintenance).  He was a carpenter and lived in Neath Street, Surrey Hills.
Muriel Elsie Thomson b1886 Ballarat East died 1902 Vic, AUC

I did find in the NZ 1911 electoral roll James Marcus Thomson, Bluff, Labourer.

Thanks

Hi Minniehaha,
Thanks for the cemetery info which I have.

Obtaining the m/c is the next step to see what names are recorded on it.

Ann/Doris was born at the home of John and Christina Taylor, Aln street, Oamaru (Christina is the sister of Agnes Craig who brought up Doris).  Christina registered Ann's birth.  When her name was changed to Doris I don't know and why.
Agnes Craig had 2 children (Mary & Thomas) from her first marriage in Scotland.  Thomas (Tom) was born c 1878 in Aberdeen, Scotland and came out to NZ in December 1908 on the ship "Tainui".  In 1910/11 he had a Tailoring business in Itchen street, Oamaru and lived at North Road, Oamaru.  I am wondering if there is any connection?
Thomas Milne died on 13 October 1946 age 68 and is buried in Anderson's Bay cemetery, Dunedin.  He was living at 536 Andersons Bay Road, Dunedin.
So far I have not been able to find any link between May Vaughan Butcher and the Craigs/Milnes.

Cheers
WNW

Hi Minniehaha,

The birth info that I have is that May Vaughan Butcher was born on 6 August 1889 in Timaru.  Her mother is Matilda Elizabeth Campbell DAVIS.

Matilda married George Wade Butcher in 1873 in NZ.  I have found two possible children from this marriage, Robert Campbell Butcher born in 1873 and Edwin Campbell Butcher born in 1881 (but read on).

The Evening Star newspaper of 23 December 1876 pg 3 records a bankruptcy for a George Wade Butcher (also in Archway) of Dunedin, Leather Merchant.  The ER for 11875-76 Dunedin has a George Wade Butcher living at Leith & Hanover streets, corner house.  After this he appears to disappear!

I did however find a George Butcher death on 6 February 1913, buried in Andersons Bay cemetery age 65 years.  Native of England and had been in NZ 50 years.  2 others unrelated are buried in the same plot.  I think that this is Matilda's first husband.

Matilda married in 1894 to David Shillito Rennett.  He died on 22 December 1945.  I have sighted his probate record and his will refers to a son Ralph Rennett, and daughters May Vaughan Thomson and Ruby Luke.  The NZ DIA Index has birth registrations in 1937 (after the death of Matilda?) of May Vaughan Rennett, Ralph Rennett and Ruby Rennett.  There are some other children but they died young.
It is possible that with the exception of Robert and Edwin the father of all Matilda's other children was David Rennett but because she was not married to the father at the time of their birth NR has been recorded on the birth entries but some were re-registered in 1937.

Cheers

Those are possibilities.  The way this family changes the use of their names makes it hard to trace them.
While looking at your possibilities I came across the following marriage notice:
"CAMPBELL-PIDWELL - At residence of Mr Pidwell on 23 inst, Edwin Butchers Campbell eldest son of Campbell Butchers of Timaru to Blanche (Winnie) fourth daughter of Joseph Pidwell of Wanganui".
Wanganui Herald 24 January 1902.

According to my research Edwin is not the eldest son; Robert Campbell Butcher is as he was born in 1874 and Edwin was born in 1881 in Timaru.  Their mother's name was Matilda Elizabeth Campbell DAVIS/DAVIES.

Hi Minniehaha,

Thanks for your posting.  After some further research I found the following:

Sarah Ann's maiden name is VAUGHAN.  Her parents are Richard VAUGHAN and Mary SHEPPARD.

Sarah married Thomas PRATT on 17 April 1830, Rotherfield Greys, Oxfordshire.  Thomas died in 1843 at Wyderop, NZ (Wyderop is apparently slang for Wairarapa)

Sarah married James CAMPBELL on 9 December 1844 in the Wesleyan Chapel, Manners Street, Wellington, NZ (the chapel was destroyed in the 1848 earthquake)

Sarah then married James DAVIS on 16 October 1850, Pelichets Bay, Dunedin.  This area has apparently been reclaimed and is now Logan Park.

Sarah lastly married Robert DENT in 1872.

I will put this to one side and concentrate on May Vaughan Butcher and her daughter Ann Butcher, aka Doris Butcher aka Doris Craig.
