Thomas Challinor, b circa 1891, left New Zealand to return to Llangollen, Wales in 1909-11.
He had emigrated to New Zealand in 1908 with his father, also Thomas, and his younger brother Arthur. I cannot seem to find him in ship passenger lists. Any suggestions? I have an Ancestry membership.

Looks as if his father died in New Zealand.........

As did Arthur?.......
1949/29421 Challinor Arthur 55Y
As he is not mentioned in the 1945 death notice, did he predecease his father?

There is a probate for his father here:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS7W-X9RS?i=274&cc=1865481&cat=2240878
And at the New Zealand national archives site, there are military records for Arthur, and his father Thomas.

There is a tree on Ancestry, which looks well researched, with Thomas's details.
https://www.ancestry.com.au/family-tree/person/tree/62842010/person/30216122000/facts
Unfortunately, on further checking, this tree has different people on the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The 1911 record is a different family.

Is it possible that Thomas worked his passage to England? He wouldn't then appear on passenger forms.
-
Mmmm ... I don't think I read your query terribly well, did I ? ::)
And so the Thomas CHALLINOR at my reply # 6 (from Brisbane to UK in 1926) probably isn't the right man. :D

I wouldn't write him off too soon, Lu - the Thomas you found is the right age, and in the right sort of trade (he's an Iron Worker on his attestation in 1909). He is an elusive gentleman.

Thanks to all of you. I've got some of that info, including Thomas's military stuff from England. But it never occurred to me to look for his father and brother in the NZ records. And the thought that he might have worked his way home on a ship is brilliant -- I know he was broke. Great response.
