Title: SotlandsPeople - Hints for deciding on a Birth Please
Post by: Jean Price on Friday 30 June 17 03:55 BST (UK)
Hello again,
Sorry, its John Gibson again.
In a small book (actually the Psalms of David) he has written some family information, and the dates he has given are correct, as I have subsequently found the person in ScotlandsPeople.
John says his birth date is 12 April 1804. Unfortunately SP has christening dates. Any hints on narrowing down the number of John Gibson's I need to look at.
One child was born in Irvine, two in Glasgow, and he was married in Dundonald so I think I should only check out Ayrshire and Lanarkshire births.
All comments most welcome.
Regards
Jean

Hi Jean,

Could you please provide a wee summary of what you have so far regarding John Gibson?

Who he married/when/where & children, where/when born in order from eldest to youngest?

Do you have a link to any other thread you have on him to avoid duplication of effort i.e. any info. already supplied?

Can I ask when the book was written where you found his date of birth please?

Apologies. I did know I should put these in.

I don't think I have worded my question very well. So, if a child is born in Scotland on 12 April 1804 how long afterwards would the christening be?

Rosinish, There is a preface to this edition - dated 2 November 1854 - which means all his little notes are written years after the fact. Perhaps this is another futile exercise.

Thank you,
Jean

Hi Jean,

Baptisms often/more likely took place in the home rather than in a Church.

The Minister/Priest would do his rounds & many (not all) were baptised on the day they were born!

Entries may not have been written up for days/weeks at a time.

I have some where there was no actual date, what was written was 'yesterday' although there is a month with dates prior & after i.e. a guess as to what day/date  ::)  ;D

In most cases a baptism would be pretty soon after birth but not all.

Listing their children in order may help if they used the Scottish naming pattern?

When & where did he die?

Census' after 1841 if he was in Scotland should give his place of birth to narrow things down?

Rosinish, Sorry I have been so long in answering your questions.

1. John Gibson born 1804 died in Tasmania in 1879 when only the country of birth was required.
2. He married Mary Brown, daughter of Andrew Brown and Janet Shields, on 14 November 1828 - Dundonald.
3. John made a list of his children - 8 in total, but only three made it to Australia. The missing 5 are not mentioned in his will.

3. Of the 8 children I have found 3 in ScotlandsPeople, and 1 from a NZ death certificate.
So here they are:
John - born 9 November 1829 in Irvine, baptism 15 November 1829 (I'm sure this is from SP but I cannot find it at the moment)
Andrew - "son of John Gibson and Mary Brown spouses Halfway Street was born 22 June and baptised 10th July 1831". (This from the Dundonald Register)
William - no record of birth or death found
William -  ""     ""     ""    ""     ""    "    ""
Mary - 10 July 1838 - this from her death certificate in NZ
James - "John Gibson Seaman and Mary Brown a law son James born 10 August . Witnesses John Gibson and John Dunlop" from Parish of Glasgow, Births and Baptisms, 12 August 1840.
Eleanor - no record of birth or death found
Andrew William - "" "" "" "" ""

Hope you can make some sense of all this and tell me what you think the names of John Gibson snr should be.

Regards
Jean

I have just come across this again as I don't have email alerts.

From the names in order if the naming pattern was used...

Parents of John likely John & Eleanor

Parents of Mary likely Andrew & Mary

Not everyone used the pattern but it's a good guide to possibilities or even finding other siblings.

Not all children were baptised & not all records have survived.

As you can search for free on Scotlands people before deciding which documents to purchase you can keep changing parameters to see which year your man crops up in .
I m just going to look for the link on how I did that  .
..I think it was by starting doing a general search with just surname and a specific region and decade ...
Then changing the decades then giving one initial of first name ...for example A. McKay will give you all the Ann's Alexander's Agnes and Angus so if you have a family you will see which siblings occur same year

Does that make sense .?

When using the naming tradition method you have to bear in mind that both grandmothers may have had the same christian name

A belated thank you to brigidmac and sancti,

Thank you for your input.
I have quite decided that my Gibson's left Scotland too early for ScotlandsPeople to be of any help to me, and Andrew Brown and Janet Shields, with only two appearances for the births of their two daughters were obviously aliens, never to be seen again ;D
