Title: Foley/Doyle, Leighlinbridge, County Carlow
Post by: kathleenmitchell on Sunday 02 July 17 14:25 BST (UK)
Hi,

I have recently traced my 3x gt Grandparents to Leighlinbridge.

Edward Foley married Margaret Doyle and they had a son Patrick Foley in May 1841, my 2x gr Grandfather.  I cannot find anymore information on my family, can anyone help, are they in your family tree?

Thanks
Kathy

Hi,

I have found my 3x gt grandparents on the Leighlinbridge register for the baptism of my 2x gt Grandfather in 1842, in the register their names are in brackets and it has Seskin next to it.  I have trawled all through the register and I cannot find anything else about them, no marriage or anymore children.

It's very strange 😕

See an Edward Foley in Upper Seskin on Griffiths;

No Foley in Seskin on 1901 census;

2 deaths on Irishgenealogy.ie of an Edward Foley in the likely time frame.
One died 1882 aged 74 so born c. 1808.Second death was in 1888 of an Edward Foley aged 83 so born c. 1805

Margaret Foley deaths.1867 aged 76,1871 aged 76,1875 aged 64,1887 aged 74

They may have married in an adjoining parish.Might be worth checking the Dunleckney,Tinryland or maybe even Paulstown or  Carlow registers around the relevant time period.

The names are only in brackets to separate one couple from the next, a few on the next page have brackets as well, that page is lined but they managed to use the wrong lines. The brackets could have been added later by someone trying to make sense of the page.

Could this be the  marriage?

http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634498#page/18/mode/1up

May 20th 1841.Second last entry on left hand page.Edward (Foley?) and Margaret Doyle with witnesses John Brennan and Betty Murphy .Address looks like Killinane.
Husbands surname is hard to make out but perhaps worth a  look.

Hi,

Thank you for the marriage details, I had just come across this after going through the whole of Carlow.

I will now start the hunt for Edward and Mary's other children (if they have any).  I know they were both dead by 1867 when Patrick married in Scotland.  He said his father was a farmer.

Thank you all for your wonderful help, if you need any help with Scotland at any time give me a shout 😁😁

Hello again,

I have been through lots of records and cannot find either Edward or Margaret, I know that they had died before 1867.

Are there any Foleys or Doyle's left in the Leighlin area, it would be lovely if we were related.

Thanks
Kathy

Hi Jack,

They must be the same family somewhere along the line.  The majority of the names you posted have been passed down my family line.

Thank you for taking the time to help me

There are a few Foley families living in or around Leighlinbridge still.Also a good few Doyle families.Doyle is a very plentiful name around Carlow,Foley less so.
The vast majority of the christian names from the headstone inscriptions are very common esp Patrick,John,James,Brigid ,Margaret,Mary ,Kate etc.Daniel and William probably less so but still pretty common

202 Foley's on 1901 census for Carlow.Most likely DED's relevant to the Leighlin area would most likely be Leighlinbridge,Old Leighlin,Clogrennane,Rathornan,Ridge.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

1576 Doyle's in Carlow at the same time.
